Steering Brakes,,, A Necessity,, Or A Nicety?? (41HP, 3000 Lb Tractor)

Well,, I went to the dealer and wrote the check today,,,
they will deliver it in a day or two :thumbsup:

It does have a differential lock,
and maybe the tires are big enough that steering brakes will be less of an issue??

I definitely will be using the power washer,, it is only 3 years old.
A little paint might needed,,, too!! :laughing:
Anyone have an extra wire brush laying around they want to donate?? :confused2:

I bought it as is,, but, at least they will deliver it,,,

It runs perfectly,, and the turbo sounds nice!!

I would not buy front weights...not if you're just using a finishing mower. Try lifting the mower and see how the front end feels. The weight of the engine might be enough.
I've had 4 Deere tractors. For two of them ( a 790 and a 4400), I always removed the loaders when mowing...no front weights. Never had a problem with the front end being light. Now, if you were going up a slope and raised the mower...well, then you might need front weight.
Front weights aren't cheap and I suggest you try before you buy them.
Now, that applies to a 72"-84" finishing mower...other implements, such as a rotary cutter (bush hog) weigh more.

That tractor is 3 years old? That can't be right with the looks of the seat and the amount of paint loss and rust on the frame (front to back) and the whole rear end. Even the hydraulic lines and connections are rusted. I'm not ripping on your choice since it is just paint, but is this what happens to a JD tractor in 3 years?

The engine runs perfect, hydraulics work fine.
Supposedly, the tractor was regularly serviced,,,
it was just used a L O T,,,

but,, it was priced appropriately,, so,, it will be some cheap fun,,
I am sure I could pressure wash it and sell it at a $4K profit on CL,,,
I already have two JD 4WD tractors as mowers,,, but, this one is SO much bigger,,,

Wow, a farmer? I would have guessed road work or something with that much front tire wear. I guess manure is about as corrosive as it gets so if used scraping lots or barns daily that would explain the paint/rust. It sounds like you have good records on everything. :thumbsup:

The "scraper" was a tire off a large rubber tired loader that is quartered,,, something like this?



I guess they move a LOT of manure?? :laughing:

Probably, they were on concrete,, so there is front tire wear,,,

I have watched a few videos on the application of "Blitz Black" paint,,,
it is kind of a denim texture paint JD uses,,,

The cleanup and painting is relaxation for me,,,
All my other machines are serviced and in need of nothing,,,

This is much more fun now compared to a decade ago,,
so much is available on-line.

All I have to do is click the mouse,, and wait for the UPS truck!!

Back in post #16 he said he already has three 100lb. suitcase weights no one suggested he buy any.

Congrats on your purchase!!!! Good project tractor that I believe will serve you well!!!!

As for front weights. I'd build a rack for your suitcase weights. Might consider turning them sideways so they don't stick out so far. Something similar to this.

Yea, I already planned on turning the weights sideways,,,
after purchasing the tractor, I was walking through the shop with the service manager,
they had just replaced the grill guard on a new JD tractor, one of the brackets was bent slightly.

I asked what was going to happen to the old one, he said it would go into the scrap bin,,,
I asked if I could have it,, he said he would bring that one,, or possibly he might have the correct one for the tractor.

So,, now, before I start welding,,, I have to see what the delivery truck brings,,,

If nothing comes,, I have steel for a scratch build,,,

I use steering brakes all the time on the 2wds. Never needed them yet on the 4x4, even in 2wd, the bigger front tires bite in and steering anyways. Mind you I have not had the front end in the air yet on the 4x4. The smaller 2wd normally only had the rear tires on the ground with something heavy on the 3pt.
