Do a google search for " Truss Bracing " . Lots of hits. Sme with good pictures.

Also take into account you local regulations as per bracing.:D

Ok here we go, yet another question. If any one is still willing to talk to me after the truss postings.

This weekend I am going to put ventilation in the garage. I am plaining to have end gable vents (size?) & sofit vents. Or is it better to go with a ridge vent the lenght of the building. 26x34. Blown in insulation. R 17 in the walls and tie vec on the outside.

Roger

Roger I have not done any research so anything I say is purely specualtion on my part. But it seems to me like hot air rises naturally and roof vents are at the highest point in the building. I got lucky and caught lowes discontinuing one of their lines and so I bought enough to do my garage and go back to install them in the rest of my house. I have soffit vents in my house and I like those. I am sure you will get a lot of opinions on here which are better and I am looking forward to seeing what some people with more experience than me, think is appropriate

Thanks folks for all the feed back::::::

Egon I did do seach found this one real good, in case any one eles is going to build or is building might be helpfull

I am still not sure if all is needed, though I think it is, but it is far cheaper to put in a few boards now then replace the roof later. Pluse once boxed in it might be a chore to get 16 footers up there.

Thanks again all

Roger, If you have not finished your roof you could put ridge venting in. AT the peak you would leave a gap (whatever the manuf. suggest) in the sheathing along the ridge of the roof. Then you would roll out the vent and nail the cap shinlgles on as you normaly would and you would have a vented attic with no visible vents.

Thanks why not:

I had a chioce the other day fill in the gap and have alot more shingling to do, or run up to the top and close the gap another day. That is what did.

The way the sheets ran I ended up on both sides a 2 1/2 inch gap. at the top.

I leaning to ridge cap, does any one have any thought about leaking or up keep repair etc. for ridge caps.

I am also thinking I will get out of cutting a whole bunch of shingles for a normal cap. Would this cut down on that.

Thanks one more time.

can you tell I should of hired this job out, but if I had I would not had enough funds to finish the job.

Great looking garage and I know the feeling of satisfaction you get doing it yourself. I've been building a 30x60 pole barn. When I get home I'm gonna look at the instructions I got with the trusses to check on bracing. I braced mine the way a local pole bulding company does theirs. I stopped at some of their building sites and took some pictures and asked a few questions. But I know mine are not braced like the diagrams I see here. I tend to overbuild so I'm sure I'll be adding braces. The guys on the forum are great. Been said many times before but the help I've had on here is priceless. I'd think you could get plenty of helpers there in Hannibal. Huck Finn sure did.

Roger:

You are doing just fine on doing this yourself there is no need to think you should have hired it out. If you notice, there are as many differing opinions as there are posts. The only thing you would have gained by hiring it out is the speed at which it gets completed. I know I am satisfied with the speed at which I complete things and even more satisfied with the satisfaction of doing things myself. If you get into a bind do just as you have been doing: ask questions.

Keep up the good work.

Regards,
Kevin

I have had the ridge vents on my house for 10+ years. No leaks, no maintenence, no problems. When I cut the plywood back to install mine, you could watch the heat lifting the saw dust out of the hole. I would reccomend them.

When I had my house roof re-done last year I insisted on ridge vents. I didn't go up on the roof to see how well they worked but I know that heat rises to the highest point inside of an attic and what better place to put a vent than at the highest point the full length of the roof.
I didn't think about it when I had my pole barn built but wish that I had. The vents I have on the pole barn are the aluminum square vents. They do help but in the summer it gets mighty hot in the attic. I have 14 inches of the blow in insulation so not much of the heat gets into the lower area. I put the insulation in myself so I know that the soffit openings are clear to insure good air flow.
I too recommend ridge vents, especially if there may be a moisture or heat problem in the attic space. I am not sure of the price difference in the alternatives but I feel that ridge vents are worth it no matter what they cost.
