normally you set a foundation/footing key. a 2x4 flat set into the footing and then removed after it sets creates an impression so that the tie-in foundation can "key" to the footing.

well today we poured our walls about 66 ft 8 ft tall 8 inch wide. The truck came from about 100 miles away. This was the only choice we had could not get to back of the property to pour the normal way from the mixer. We had to drop the eletric line for clearance. wall the belt for the cement truck up the street becasue he need a 60' wide open spot to turn the boom. took two hours total to set up and tear down and only 30 minutes or less to pour. it sure worked slick.

Tomorrow tear down and paint the wall and hope to pour the floor thurs. or fri. wish me luck

well it had to happen:

All the work on the concrete was going to good for this time of year until today.

Yesterday we pulled the forms and the walls looked good. I painted the wall black with tar and gave a good coating of tar at the joint of the wall and footing.

Then put the drain tile 4" with a sock.

This morning we were going to back fill with clean rock when the storm hit and we had 3" of rain by 5:00 this evening and its still comming down.

Now I have a big promblem on one of my checks on the foundation I saw skim of tar floating in a moat of water around the outside of the wall. The sock now has tar around it too. In the morning I guess I will have to check it again and see if I will have to let it dry and rip out the drain tile.
Has any one had this happen and what do you do. some folks said let it dry and dump the gravel on it. Hum?

It will be fine.... just as long as the fabric isn't totally clogged. No need to replace the drain pipe. Just one of the little hiccups in the building trades.. :D

I'm jumping into this late but it is great fun to see the progress. I've wanted to build something like this for a long time.

I've put up a couple towers for ham radio and was told to keep rebar from touching the surrounding soil to prevent rust from penetrating the concrete. From the initial footing pix, it looks like the rebar is sticking up out of the dirt. Is this not a problem anymore? A new rebar material perhaps?

n8wrl:

Thanks for veiwing. The rebar is in about 8 inches stright down in a footing that is 2 foot wide and 3foot deep. Or a 1,800 dollar hole in the ground with cement. So it does not contact the the soil. Brother in-law was on us to make sure during the pour that the rebar did not get to close to the edge as to burn ithe concrete, which I take it as meaning rusting through over time.

This morning I got up and we have mud over the tub, we had 3 inches of rain and then about 1inch more during the night. We looked at this morning and we feel that the tar was still in place but a 1inch coating of clay up 3/4 of the tubing and sock.

Oh joy we are to get 15 inches of snow tonight, (1st time in years for that amount) figures. Last week it was in the upper 60's, got to love Missouri. We tried to get a back hoe this morning but every one I called said nope to icey to be on the roads. We wanted to scoop the mud out and dump gravel over the wall.

It was not to be.

Mean while my truck and jeep will get iced on and snowed on while my JD will stay warm and cozy in our one car garage under our house.

If I did not have bad luck I would not have any at all. But on the sunny side of it I do have the walls and the footing in waiting for dry sunny day.

I look at it this way I will get to play on my tractor with my f/loader. (smile)

Thanks all

I must disagree. I think you've had some very, very GOOD luck to get your concrete poured and set up before the rains and snow started. Just think if this storm had been a week earlier or you had been a week later!!!!

roermo I agree with eddie you at least got it poured before all of that hit. I was going to get my framing on my walls done but ran into a short delay. I am glad I did the rain before the snow was one of the hardest rains I have seen here. I am going to start building walls tomorrow but I should be able to get them up and decking in place before any more rain i am hoping.

continue to send pics I have some of the before shots. After I get started I will put them on here

roermo,
Think about outside lighting. I like a big light way high up. The higher up, the bigger it seems to spread out to me. These little coach lights on the side walls are practically worthless for lighting good enough to work by. Also what about lighting to get from the new garage to the house? Before you put all that dirt back, would you be needing to lay some wiring and also to have a way to get that wiring into your electical box? Like through the walls or under the dlab?

Are you putting any plumbing in your garage? i didnt see any pipes sticking up for drains. Our house was done like your garage, poured footings, then the side walls then the last thing was pouring the floor. But before the floor was poured there were pipes set in with wood boxes around them so that the pour didn't cover future drains.

One of the more cool things i ever read on TBN was somebody who bought a used dishwasher for their garage. They used it to wash car parts in. I don't recall you mentioning plumbing at all, perhaps you did and i just missed it. Are you going with any heating? Any usable attic space? Many thanks for sharing your project. With a one car garage i would say you were garaged "challenged' and this is a necessary project.

Rox: thanks for the note, as far as lighting outside I am going with the halogen light on motion switch . I am going to jump off my box in the house, do not want a sep meter because of they charge another usage charge. I will be running heavy wiring, phone, and network cable even though I have wireless (never know). I will run a gas line too. I check with my insurance guy and I can not have a wood stove. (Darn) I heat my home 100 percent by wood. As far as water and sewer I had to skip that one due to not being able to hook to sewer or the house sewer, just too costly. I am only 12 feet from the kitchen door so water is not far away. As far as attic I am going to have trusses made and they have a 40 pound per sq. ft load. I will have some room down the middle about 5 ft. high and 8 ft wide. Not much but will work for me.

I am pouring the floor tomorrow at 8:00 on the 13th. Today I put in a ½ ton of steel rebar and tide it up and put on chairs. Its like waiting for Christmas morning but instead of toys its concrete.

I have one large mistake caused by me, I brought in gravel with out shooting the grade, was in a hurry to get in the gravel to keep the mud down. I brought in way to much. When the brother in law shoot the grade we had to take out about 4 inches of gravel. Thank goodness for a back blade on my tractor.

I cant wait until the floor is dry and I can start framing. The yard is a mud pile/pit/swamp.

Wish me luck, I will post photos tomorrow night.
