Do Sthil chainsaws ever go on sale? Do dealers discount them? I checked out a few shops but haven't started and negotiations. I got the feeling from the small talk that the MSRP was the one and only price. Is that true?

I just replaced spark, filters, and chain on my 10 yo mcculloch and it ran fine for a while. Now it's getting hard to start and even when it does, it's acting like the clutch is going south... I kinda wish the thing simply blew up. I did this dance, struggling to keep a ryobi trimmer running and spent too much good money keeping that thing running. In the end, the head on the ryobi locked up and it died a quick death.

I got about 10% off at the local Stihl dealer by buying a combi motor and several attachments for it all at once, but that was about $900 after the discount.

I bought a Husky saw because I perceived it to be about equal quality to the Stihl and they are frequently discounted. On the Husky, the big box store did not have the lowest price. The local dealer had a special where the saw itself was more than at a big box store, but he threw in a free carrying case and two extra chains, which were extra cost items at the box store.

'round here all the Stihl prices are the same, doesn't matter where you go.

When I got my 180C the dealer threw in a case and some oil. That may be the best you can do.

When you need repair parts don't expect any deal either. I just replaced the fuel line on my Sthil and it was over $14 for a 6" piece of rubber.

Around here I keep getting the feeling they are going to start implementing a cover charge to walk into the stores. Its a privilege to walk into their store and look at their saws.

I just bought a MS310. The dealer threw in a case, 3 chains and a 20" bar (it came with an 18") for free.

My understanding is that they aren't really reducing prices but you can get them to threw in some extras to sweeten the deal.

While they may be expensive, my dad has a 30-year old Stihl 041AV that runs like a top. What a great machine!

The MS290 I bought about 4 years ago was on sale and it appeared to be a Stihl promotion not just my dealer. Last year I bought a 180 and I got a free carrying case and some oil for free. They may be high priced but if you look at what used ones are selling for on ebay it's crazy. Almost as much, if not more than a new one some times.

My dealer will discount the "Pro line" saws a little bit but not the midrange and homeowner models. I bought a MS361 about a year ago and he knocked off $50 bucks. Still got the free case and extra chain too.

In my area ALL Stihl dealers charge the full MSRP. The local John Deere dealer has a sale in the spring and fall were they invite Stihl (along with other vendors) to come for a demo day. During the demo day the Stihl stuff is all 10% off MSRP. I purchased all of my Stihl stuff during those sales :D.

Stihl themselves occasional offer a "deal" with a free case, extra chains etc. thrown in but you still pay MSRP for the saw itself. When I purchased my MS290 I got the 10% off because of the demo day along with a free case, a hat and a extra chain due to the Stihl promotion they were advertising at the time.

My experience here in the UP of Michigan is the same as everyone else. You will notice that there is no gray market on the Internet.

On the other hand, I have great experience with my Stihl saws. I probably wouldn't buy another brand.

The sale that is on right now in Canada is that you get $85 of accessories for "free". Carrying case, chain, ball cap, DVD etc.
My next and probably last saw will be a Stihl. From what I have seen they are worth the price.

I'm going to get a ms 290. It's expensive but I hope it'll last. I'm going to push to get the case & an extra chain.

Check out Husky. Just got a 55 Rancher, awesome saw, and it was a fall special, carrying case, knife, hat and dvd all included.

I purchased a pro line MS-460 (Sept 08) with a 25" bar and two extra chains for $755. There are two dealers in northern Oregon who give commercial discounts. One at 10% off MSRP and the other 12% off.

It paid for itself in one job.

Yeah, Stihls don't get marked down very often. Since you can't buy them commercially on the 'net, I guess they figure you have no choice. You might be able to get a couple local guys competing with each other and save some $$ that way. When I got my 066 some years back, I saved about $100.00 by doing that. ;)

I bought a pile of Husky's from Madsen's (here's their Main Menu) over the years - even with shipping, they still beat the local guys' pricing. Still one of the best places to buy chains/supplies.

Is the "C-B Version with Quick Chain Adjuster" worth the extra 30$?

I started looking at the ms290 but may go for the 270 because the 290 has a plastic crankcase and the 270 crankcase is metal.

any one have a stihl with the quick tensioned? do you recommend it?

My father and I are still using a 028 that I bought for him approx. 25 years ago. Seems these models used (good running condition) are bringing what I gave for it new back then.
