SA, are you using a band saw to prepare your bevels?
Yeah, because I'm lazy!

That's just about how mine looked with 6013
Wow that's great! I don't have a lot of luck with 6013. Just soon avoid it!:confused2:

Have you tried any open root pipe yet?

I haven't. I don't have a lot of pipe to work with so I might just have to go to a supplier and get some to work with.

For practice at home, do what I do. Take a bucket of drops from the Ag shop home with you, weld them up and when you're done, put'em back in the scrap bin. The shop shouldn't mind as long as they get them back to sell. Ask permission of course. That translates into free practice material.

I worked on it tonight. At first I was going too fast and my bead wasn't wide enough for my expectations, but after a few drips and beads later I got it down okay. It just seemed to work better with stringers instead of weaving.

Speed control--that's where a lot of newbies have trouble--I did when I took up stick welding a few years ago.

I found that practicing speed control with drag rods (7014 and 7024, aka idiot rods) paid off when I use rods like 6011 and 7018 which are more difficult to handle properly.

Yeah I snuck some 7014 in my pocket from the shop a couple of days ago. It really helps when you are just starting on new techniques or positions.

One thing that will help with welder settings is to keep a little note pad with your gear. Write down the welder settings, rod type, metal used, prep you did and the results. Over a period of time these notes will keep you from guessing. I have been welding for 20+ years and I keep notes when I come accross an odd job. This has saved me numerous times.

Oh, and relax. If you force it you will be a nervous wreck. Being comfortable will show in your progress.
