Strange smell

I recently bought a used 10 ft Prime disc to use behind my 69 pto 281xe Massey. The 10 ft disc makes short work of discing hunting fields . However I think the disc may be to much for the tractor to pull. Today I smelled a slight burning smell. The tractor only has about 200 hours on it. I was wondering if I could be damaging the tractor?

I would think that unless your tractor is lugging down under a strain, you're not doing damage to it. There may be a leak somewhere that is getting overheated and causing the smell however. Check over the disc really well for leaks and also check the tractor for any leaks, most likely near the engine / exhaust. I hope it's nothing serious, John
Oh, I didn't think about it, but does the disc use belts? Maybe they're just not tensioned enough. J

A 10' disk should be no problem for a 69 HP tractor unless the disk is some kind of HD contractors disk (22, 24, 26 or larger blades). However even a 10' can pull hard if the blades are set/angled aggressively and soil type is light/sandy where the disk really digs in.

As far as smell, the disk shouldn't smell. Was your tractor running warmer than usual?

The soil is a sandy type soil. The smell was coming from the tractor . I am wondering if it could just be the "new" burning off the engine. I have checked and I have no leaks.

As long as your water temp light never came on.. and your oil pressure/temp light didn't come on.. and you weren't loading the engine to a stall or making it lug excessively.. I'm gonna guess you are ok... they are made to run hard...

I'll add that a 69hp tractor has an engine hp somewhere in the mid to low 70's.... that's a pretty stought tractor.. 70hp does a whole lotta work...

I pull a 10' disc with my 45hp tractor. I even have about 500lbs on it to make it cut in deeper. I just have to make sure it is in 4wd or it will spin out.
