Remind me again....what was the purpose of PULLING these stumps? (those little ones could be ground out in about 10 minutes....or YOU could use your large grapple :laughing: )

What did you do, rob a bank?? That grinder is a beauty. I have the poor man's stump remover.

I'm wondering about the actual forces involved now. If I could do it with single chain on each end it would make it alot simpler. I need a way to set the pressure to the chain strength to avoid breaking expensive chain. I guess the gauge and the throttle will do it.

Breaking strength of GR 70 chain is 4 times the work load limit. This is there because most working loads involve inertia and acceleration/unintentional jerking. Your load does not. I would not hesitate to go to 2.5 the WLL of the chain for your type of application. Actual chain stretch will happen above 3 and then youve damaged the chain, but not necessarily weakened it any ... just less stretch available to absorb jerk energy. Watch out for hook problems. The chain is stronger than the hooks.

Does the cyl have 14T pull force ... or is that its push force?

that was just so I could use single chain, but after feeling how tight they were I was glad there were two of them on there. Don't have much experience snapping chains but I bet 1/2" grade 70 isn't where I want to start.
As for getting the trees to lean I'm going back and forth between trying to yank the stump halfway, or using a lever to increase my draw length, and going with like four 1" ropes up high. I know what you mean about 'almost' getting it to lean the right way. One is going to be tough. I'll save that one for last.

You cannot break or even come close to stretching a 1/2" Gr70 chain with 14T force. Breaking strength of that chain is 45,200 pounds.

Thanks Larry, I've been wondering about that. The pull calculates to 29,158 if my pump goes to 2700lbs., so I guess I'm at close to 3x WLL on the (single) chain. Gotta check the hooks I ordered again, I think those are chineese.
edit. the hooks say they're rated the same, 11,300.

I think I'm gonna call this the final system. The straps allow me to move it, (they're a little long, but I had them), and I can set it on the next stump for storage. I picked up a couple grab hooks for adjustments, only one used here on a short piece of chain, gonna put one on the other end tomorrow.

It kind of funny what we go through to develop an effective method within our means to remove stumps, when in the "old" days before all the regulations a home owner or farmer would order a case of dynamite or gun powder and roll their own. Normally the fuses were ordered even if you made your own sticks. Got this statement from my grandfather last week who in his 90's.

With Bore, stroke, rod all the same is there any advantage of a tie rod cylinder over a welded?

They seemed to be cheaper with tie-rods. I got mine from the surplus page on Baileys. I was thinking of getting a four footer but now I don't think it would have made a difference, I need to pull them from both directions and then they're ready to go.

Have you had any "surprise" pulls yet where the smaller stump stayed & the bigger one came out?

I ask just because I've been surprised both ways when pushing over lives trees recently. Sometimes ones much bigger than I thought would go over, do go over; And sometimes smaller ones I think will be a piece of cake break off instead of the root ball coming up & out. The ones that break off are very disappointing. :laughing:
