Have you had any "surprise" pulls yet where the smaller stump stayed & the bigger one came out?

I ask just because I've been surprised both ways when pushing over lives trees recently. Sometimes ones much bigger than I thought would go over, do go over; And sometimes smaller ones I think will be a piece of cake break off instead of the root ball coming up & out. The ones that break off are very disappointing.

I keep wondering about that, but so far the smaller ones were the ones that went. It looks strange when you pull from the opposite side, the second time. One moved about a foot sideways before it started tipping. Had to rub my eyes..

Sounds like its going to be well worth the investment. Im surprised no one else had done this before. Really have me to wondering now... Great job

Been done before, Hillbilly stump puller VERY effective but with the chances of snapping chains etc. you almost need a Fermi type winch or a D8 for real safety. But then if you are smart enough to run a chainsaw you can probably do it safely.

/edit -
Note that the "hillbilly" uses 2 cylinders and even then it's got limited pull.

With Bore, stroke, rod all the same is there any advantage of a tie rod cylinder over a welded?
thanks

A welded cyl has fewer parts to break. Supposed to be stronger. Pressure rating is usually higher for the welded cyl.

And here I thought I had an origional idea.
I suppose since hydraulics was discovered people have been pushing and pulling stuff with it.
That post points out that if you break a chain, the link that breaks shoots out at a 90 degree angle, something to think about there..

jake98,

Congratulations on your Hydraulic stump puller build.

Original or not, you proved that it could and will work. You will also probably find other things to do with it.

Could I do what Jake's doing, even though I have no rear remotes?

Meaning, could I use say my FEL's valve's curl/ uncurl function to power that powerful cylinder he's using?

(I know very little about hydraulics; if yes to the above this would still allow me to raise/ lower my FEL, just not curl/ uncurl)

Until someone else chimes in - I'm pretty sure you can, you've got the size. After Christmas I'm PLANNING on trying it with my B7610. As was suggested to me over on the Kubota O/O forum.

Yes you can. You can install QD's on the curl circuit, and just plug in what you want to use. You could also install a diverter valve, to switch between the curl and the stump puller cylinder.

You would still have lift.

Woe, now that would be where it's at! Can you recommend one?!
