Northern has had some even worse answers, like for there little $99 110V buzz box stick welder, someone asked if they could weld a brush guard for his truck with it. The northern answer was "because brush guards are normaly thicker then 1/8th inch, and this machine is rated for up to 1/8th inch, you can not build a brush guard with this machine". That proves he knows nothing about welding, you can always weld over a machines rated capicity, it just needs multiple passes. That is probably the welding answer that I hate the most.

WOW I had answered the question on northern that I just posted, and shortly after, they removed the question. I assume that was so that northern staff wouldnt seem like they dont know what they are talking about.

I'd have answered no as well. On thicker steel those little boxes can't even get hot enough to build passes in thick steel, you'd really need to preheat. The northern guy isn't going to explain all that.

Asking stupid questions without being belittled is one of the primary functions of this forum. I would prefer that folks are comfortable asking questions, rather than being hesitant and maybe injuring themselves and others.

He still could have said it would work for 1/4 inch with 2 or 3 passes, which is what it would be made of. I am sure you could do 1/4 inch in 2 or 3 passes with 70 amps.

Attach the 1/8" filler rod to the welding bench with a vise-grip and let it hang vertical then attach the ground clamp to the other end of the filler rod.
CAUTION as the filler rod can become cherry red depending on the amount of amps being dropped.

I saw this for the first time about 20 years ago. An older fella was welding S/S process pipe on the 3rd floor of the building and the 8 pack was down outside on the first floor. He didn't have to go down and turn the welder down. He had about 8" of 1/8, S/S filler on his ground glowing bright red.

You could do it, but I wouldn't trust the strength of it for a critical application.

I agree, but the question was for a brush guard to keep bushes from hitting his trucks radiator, not something critical.

If that stuff is has a flash point of 54 deg f, wouldnt it just blow up when used in an air arc?
