Maybe you misunderstood. I never said *you* said they were identical, even though I'm puzzled by your statement they are one and the same
Ashland's MSDS repository for tractor fluid shows 13 individual products they make and market under different names, and 6 brands. That isn't including the Kubota fluids. Since they don't show the Kubota products it may be safe to assume they even make a number of other OEM fluids too that aren't shown either.
The point is even though ONE company, Ashland, makes at least 15 different tractor fluid labeled products doesn't mean they are or are not the same fluid.
Now I'd love to know for sure one of the lower priced alternatives they make is exactly/identical/one and the same as the Kubota branded product.
The real puzzler inspecting the MSDS shows that UDT contains a zinc antiwear agent and the SUDT does not
Like anyone I'd love to save the dollars if I knew I was getting the exact same product.

I used to do deliveries of oil products for Shell, The lube plant in Sewaren, NJ used a bunch of different carriers. Made a delivery to a small factory in north NJ that was a lube supplier, had 5 tanks & a selection of drums to make every product they sold...one old guy used to make the additive mix and they would blend in so much off this and that & can it...had their own group of customers in the metro area for years...was neat to see.

I have a B2620 HST I purchased new this spring. I went to my dealer this weekend and bought everything to do the 50 hour service myself. I asked my dealer which hydraulic fluid to put back in and he said UDT would be fine. In fact, they don't carry the SUDT. He said that nobody buys it and they haven't had any reason to believe that the SUDT does anything the UDT doesn't. We live in SW Oklahoma where it is 100+ degrees all summer long and it seldom drops below freezing for longer than a day or two. So my B2620 which according to the manual came from the factory with SUDT and can be filled with either SUDT or UDT will be getting it's fluid replaced with plain ole UDT fluid. Just wanted to pass along what I was told. If anyone thinks my dealer is way off base, please feel free to substantiate your claims. Thanks in advance.

In the climate that you live in it probably isn't a problem. But, if you were in a northern climate that had a high amount of cold days in the winter, than I would use SUDT. SUDT flows much better in the winter when it's dead cold.

Unless you have HST I really don't think it makes a lot of difference which fluid you use. A gear transmission and hydraulic pump is, after all, a gear transmission and hydraulic pump. As someone pointed out early on, old tractors have been using "regular" hydraulic fluid for a lot of years without damage. The UDT or equivalent may be noisy at first in cold weather, but that's livable.
The HST is a cat of another stripe, though... I'm glad I went with gear drive, just for debates like this. If I had 20k invested in a new HST tractor I'd be twitchy about what I put in it too.
Like some of the guys said, you've invested big bucks in a new tractor, a few hundred more is well worth it if it helps you sleep better at night knowing you've used what Big K recommends. I'm serious.

Right - and 'bota takes one of the same $2.50 aftermarket filters and stamps their name on it to make the $8 filter.
Surely no-one thinks that Kubota actually makes their own UDT/SUDT?
I use a generic UDT that I get from Sam's Club for $28/5gal in my 2400 hour L4200GST. Works just fine.
