Thanks Paul, that looks great. I have attached a crude picture of what I had in mind based on large block motor camshaft. Take a look and see what you think. Comments and alternative designs welcome!

My initial thought on the cam shaft was that the lobes aren't high enough off the central shaft. Then, after looking at your drawing, I realized that, when you "add up" all of the lobes around the cam, the net effect would be a larger diameter shaft, with no eccentric lobes at all! this is because as the frame comes off the ramp of the first lobe, it would simultaneously be coming onto the ramp of the next lobe. In order to make it work, you would need to grind off most of the lobes, and then it would'nt be balanced. I would stick with the crankshaft idea, since the eccentricity is much greater than the camshaft, and you can find a 1 cylinder model from many sources. Good luck.

How is this project coming?????

This looks like fun! Could you take your basic horizontal shaft, upright cylinder briggs and use it as the eccentric? Pop the cylinder head off, take out the valve train and weld/bolt something to the top of the piston to connect to your framework. The existing crankcase will keep everything lubed and you can drive it off a pulley on the crankshaft /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Larry,

Problem with cams and eccentrics like the two recent pictures is that over 1000 lb being lifted the entire stroke, every revolution, requires a lot of motor. You could offset the mechanism so it only lifts at the very end of the stroke but that will cause pounding as it engages the load. You could reduce the pounding with a more sophisticated mechanism but where will it all end...

My favorite suggestion here is RonL's one about using a vibrator and loading the screen slowly. Unless this a commercial operation, what's another 30 seconds a load?

Drill holes through your bearing caps and bearings and find a couple of oilers off of an old hit or miss engine. They used the same oilers on a lot of industrial equipment. You can set the drip rate so it keeps the bearing oiled and the dirt washed out.Grease zerts and a pump or two of the gun every half hour or so would work but you are going to get busy and forget and the grease is going to attract dirt. If you use a crankcase set up you are going to have to seal it or it will fill with dirt and ruin your bearings pretty quickly. You can always pour babbit bearings in the crank saddles, babbit has good embedability and is probably the best bearing material for open bearings operating in a dirty enviroment there is. Sealed bearings are really what you need but, what's the fun in that? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am picking up a new air powered vibratory motor today. It was the easiest solution . I will let you all know how it works.

Paul!! That's a great picture..not crude at all.Well done,Sir.Exactly what I envisioned.Any doubts about lifting capacity could be reduced by half by pivoting the frame in the center creating a rocking motion.I also think you wouldn't have to dump in the whole 1000lbs at one time.
