Been keeping my eye out for a few suitcase weights to use on my tractor. Shipping them across the country would seem to be prohibtively expensive when it comes to say.... purchasing them on Ebay. Has anyone had any cut out of heavy steel plate at a steel shop? Anyone got any pics of some that were made. I'm thinking i'd like "real" suitcase syle weights, as opposed to a ballast box filler with concrete, as i'd like to be able to move them from front to rear as needed. Any thoughts?

I bought mine from a dealer for about $36 each plus tax. They're 40lb each. I think you would have to layer any kind of metal to get that kind of weight. Surely a dealer near you has them.

Where are you located?

Eddie,
I have a couple tractor dealers near me. The parts guy at the NH / Kubota shop told me that they have specific weights for specific brands.... and when i told him i had a Yanmar, he just gave me a dumb look and scratched his head. The were eighty dollars for a forty pound weight (though, according to him wouldn't hang on my tractor properly). I'm in New Hampshire, which isn't as big of a farming area as , say, Nebraska. Probably not as likely to find too many used ones out my way. I'm in the process of making a bracket to fit my 3PH, so i'd like to find some weights before i finish it so they will fit and lock on properly before i get too deep into it.

Go to any John Deere dealer and get them. Of course they fit Yanmar, that is what small Deeres are. I bought them for my YM 1700 Yanmar, and painted them sage green. Now I have a Deere and am painting them back to JD Green. They weigh I think they say 42 lbs a piece. On the 1700 it just took 4 to fit, the front. I only bought 3 so I had to make a wood spacer to keep them in place. Which worked out OK as the Deere only holds 3 unless you went to the outside of the bumper, then it would hold 5. I don't remember, they were somewhere between $35 and $40 a piece.

Try you local john deere dealer, ask for weights to fit a jd 4100, they are the same as original Yanmar 20kg weights

Should be able to fit three.

Hope this helps............... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would think any import tractor dealer would have some like these to fit here.

When this tractor gets a paint job these will be painted green /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Great ! I'll take a poke at my Deere dealer, since that is where i bought the tractor anyway. I'd like to have three or four hanging around.

Eddie those are the exact same thing that you buy at John Deere, I have 3 of them out in the garage, that I bought from them. And the guy that says ask for the ones for a 4100, I don't think they have different sizes, if they do they only showed me this size when I asked for suit case weights. They didn't ask me what they were for.

I know i've seen a few that hang/mount differently than what i'm looking for. No matter what color they come.... that is easy enough to change. I've got a deere dealer twenty miles north, and twenty miles south of me.... i'll get to one or the other in the next couple days. Thanks for the advice !

Course Duc you could just save $ for weights and put on a FEL. You know that's where you'll end up over time.javascript:void(0)

Ductape,
Are there any tractor junk yards around you? There is a big dismantler near me. They charge $20 for the small JD weights that fit my 186d. By the way if you want a great workout try carrying 2 of them up and down the celler stairs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup..... i know i'll have a loader on it as soon as possible, but i'd still like to have a few weights anyway. As far as a tractor dismantler goes...... i know there is one in Maine, perhaps a few hours from me. I'd love to poke around there... suitcase weights or not. I can't get enough old iron of any kind. Chris... as far as walking up and down the cellar stairs with suitcase weights in my hands.... as fun as that sounds, it would really cut into my 'eating cheetos and watching dirty movies' time ! Which brings me to another story........

OK..... so yesterday i decide to stop at the Deere dealer south of me to pick up a suitcase weight so i can try it out for size. I go out back to their parts counter, and get in line for some help from the parts guy. Waiting in line for the better part of a half hour while the older gentleman buying filters for his garden tractor argues with the parts guy over why an air filter is now thirty dollars when the last one he bought there was nineteen. So when i'm up i ask for a weight for a 4100 series tractor, and the parts person tells me they can't sell me one. I need to go out front to the showroom and wait to talk to a salesman to buy one. Whaaa ?????? The parts counter CAN'T sell me one suitcase weight ?????? Really?? They need to be paying out commission on a single suitcase weight?? Needless to say i walked out without buying a weight. I'll just go to the dealer north of me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As I told you, you don't need to ask for the 4100 tractor. Fact is when I bought mine, I'm not sure there even was a 4100. Either way, the only suitcase weights they had at this dealer was all the same size. But I do remember, they were not in the parts part. They were over in another building. But either way I think you got a raw deal, some of these places think they are above everyone else.

Scott,
As long as you are doing the JD dealer tour you might ask the guy who sells the used lawn and garden stuff if they have any used ones. If they do they should be a little cheaper. Many times the dealers seperate used equipment so they can make a little more money The 40lb weights are pt#R66949. It is weird the way JD divides stuff up as far as who sells it. There is a whole bunch of good stuff that is called whole goods and you won't find it in parts and looks like weights are whole goods. if you want to get technical you want the ones that fit a 750 which is the nearest JD to your 186D. I'm pretty sure that they all use the same weight. The weights for my 425 mower fit my Yanmar.

Its not a huge deal that the parts counter wouldn't sell me the weights. It just irritated me that after standing around waiting to get help, they wouldn't help me. It wasn't like i was buying a new tractor and wanted to add weights to the deal and finance them with the tractor ! The older guy ahead of me was actually amusing.... sort of reminded me of my pop (God rest his soul!). Perhaps i should have just gone to the dealer i bought my tractor from to begin with, but this place is halfway between work and home and it was more convenient. Funny how a little thing like that leaves a sour tast in your mouth, and i will probably never try to spend a dollar there in the future !! I guess i didn't realize ALL of the JD weights were the same ! Now that i know the garden tractor weights are the same also... there is a guy who just deals in used stuff (mostly lawn and garden stuff) i'm going to pay a visit to !

I just orderd 2 42LB suitcase weights for my 2000BD from Lowes. Go to the website and search on "weight". There is no charge for shipping as you pick it up at the nearest Lowes location. I paid $38 ea. Be warned: the shipping is two weeks.

If I remember right, John Deere didn't charge me much or maybe no more than that for me weights. Of course it might also be according to where you are, and the dealer.

Success !!! Went to the used lawn and garden guy and picked up two used weights for $30 each, then to the Deere dealer and bought a third new weight for $36. Strangely... the Deere dealer i went to today (the one that sold me the tractor) had them on a shelf in the parts area ! No fuss, no muss! No waiting in line to have the parts guy send me to see a salesman ! I shoulda just gone there first to begin with. Incredibly... one of the used weights is a factory Yanmar unit. Gotta keep that one on the outside with the logo showing. Looks like i now have a date with a black rattle can !!
