From this side, it looks like a better fit. The hood actually goes to the top of the cowell (above the battery). The Yanmar looks noticeably taller but the Kohler actually sits on a plate that is recessed below the frame rails. The difference in height is not that much. The width and length is a greater concern. There is not a lot of room inside the confines of the original hood.

Finally front view. Once I get the original motor out of there, I can then assess a little better what I'll need to do. Anyone need a replacement Kohler? I can already see that it's going to be more work than I had hoped because I'll clearly need to make at least some modification to the frame rails. This is the point where I think many folks will toss up their arms and give up. I am not deterred and am determined to fit it in there. One question I've been asking myself is whether I'll be able to still have a hood once I'm done  . The original hood is steel and is 4 parts: Front grill, top, and side curtains. If fit becomes an issue, I'm hoping that I can get by by removing or trimming the side curtains leaving the grill and top. If that does not work, then it's going to have a more custom DIY look than I had hoped but I've got my fingers crossed. Anyone know if the crossing fingers thing actually works?

Well, that's my initial reaction to the motor. I'm glad I got another project to tackle although the truth is I need another one like I need a hole in the head. Please be patient and it's going to take some time. Maybe much longer than I had originally planned as my work (the kind that puts bread on the table) has taken a turn and became another victim of the California Housing market. Since my boss has decided to hang it up rather than bleed red, looks like my immediate time is going to be occupied by rectifying that issue first. Anyone looking to add to their workforce and has a job to offer? I am not looking forward to this. The local job market is not good. I'm told it could take 4 months or more to find something. Drats.

That's a neat looking motor. Hopefully the modifications are not huge. Hope you locate a new/better job soon.

SuperD- Interesting motor, interesting project. Any idea what a new one of those motors might cost?
Sorry to hear about the job situation... here is hoping/praying that your next job is a better one.

Looks like a great project! Can't wait to see the results. If you need any tips on making room, you can talk to this guy:

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I've been brainstorming the last couple of days on how I'm going to do this. A lot of ideas have come to mind already. Another reminder (to myself) that it's best not to jump into things too quick or I'll lose out on all the great ideas this valuable mind continues to churn out if only I'll give it time -- :D .

KubotainNH: I've come to conclude that the modifications will consist of making the wiring work together (not that hard), addition of a fuel return line to fuel tank (fuel injection requires circulating fuel), adding a fuel transfer pump, making a little room in the frame rails and fabricating a new engine mounting plate, installing a new pulley and electric PTO assembly as the new block has a slightly larger diameter shaft and then after all is OK, make the hood work. The belt interface (as opposed to a bellhousing/shaft) is very forgiving and it's merely a matter of setting engine at correct location (otherwise, I'll need to get different length belts, don't know how hard that'll be to locate) and finally getting new engine set up to run.

IXLR8: I paid around $1k for this motor. The list price of new ones are $3,656.00 but I've also seen brand new ones floating around from various vendors for around $1700 that apparently were OEM'ed for Husqvarna turf care products and could be had if desired, in quantity. I've also seen them as high as $3200 so you do need to check around. I wouldn't be suprised to see someone snatch up the rest of these and charge a lot more to repower some older tractors with blown engines but otherwise good working condition. I had mulled the new vs. old thing but decided that since my tractor is already 10 years old, putting a used engine in @ 1/2 the cost was more practical. The other thing that steered me this direction was that this was a working demo already pre-wired and connections labeled. Was told that the new ones have no documentation/instructions with it and no tech support so I shyed away from that. If it works the way I envision, I won't hesitate however to recommend this swap.

jcims: Good interesting link but 4 wheel drive, Two 600hp motors for a total of 1200hp in the size of a small japanese economy car and ONLY 10.96 in the quarter, well, I'm not overly impressed.

T the fuel return line back to the feed hose from the tank... If it has an electric or mechanical fuel charge pump to lift fuel to the injector pump, make sure the return T is on the suction side ( tank side ) of the fuel charge pump. You will essentially be dumping unused fuel back to the feed line from the tank..

Superduper:
The 2V78 is a great engine. I had one for 6 years in a JD 355D. Lots of power and good economy. Only problem I had right after I got it was one of the composite valve covers was porous and leaked a bit of oil.

Be aware that this engine shakes pretty bad at idle. My 355D had big rubber mounts on the engine. When it is started or shut off it can be a bit violent on the shakes too.

Is your weed whacker a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Every 4 stroke I have has a governor.

The 2 cycles are "governed" too. By port timing and fuel/air flow... ;)
