Was promised that it would be shipped on Monday. Didn't hear from him til wednesday and I didn't want to keep pestering him due to the problems he was facing (he sounded really down). The good news is that it's on the way. Got pro tracking number and the shipper says estimated date of arrival is next thursday 3/20/2008. Seems a little slow but at least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Once it gets here, looks like I'll have to go pick it up from the terminal. I agreed to terminal/terminal shipping to help him keep his shipping costs down. So, if everything works out like expected, I should have it here next friday.

Wow, is that little motor powering the truck that's doing the shipping? Seems slow but maybe that's from living in the fast pace world we dwell in.

Yeah, the trucking co is breaking the motor in for me.

Seriously, it amounts to 6 business days or 8 days total from Ohio to California. Seems a little slow to me as well, even for a trucking company but oh well, at least it does show up in their system when I do an online trace so it's just a matter of time. The BOL did not show the price charged for the shipping (215#'s crated) and I was told by the dealer that it costed more than he anticipated to ship it here so he will be eating the difference between what he expected and actual. I paid him $150 to ship it. For all I know, he might even be making money on the shipping if he is a preferred shipper.

If you wanted it sooner you could have told the shipper to put it on an expedited truck, it would cost between 2 & 3 dollars a mile.

No. The total time from payment to arrival is probably going to be a month now. The shipping actually looks like it will take 8 days which seems to be longer than most truck freight stuff I buy but acceptable. The seller's dwaddling contributed to most of the delay. I suppose I could have paid more to have expedited shipping but then the shipping would have costed more than what I paid for the motor. I'll take the extra days instead.

I upgraded from a JD335 with a 20HP Kawasaki Gas, to a JD355 with an 18HP Yanmar Diesel. Same size mower deck (54") and snowthrower (42").

Simply no comparison between the two, the 18HP Diesel feels much stronger (even though the Kaw motor never felt weak). Much greated lugging ability and the engine never feels stressed like the Kaw motor.

And YES it does use just about 1/2 as much fuel, especially when doing light load chores the Yanmar will run all day.

Fred, that is great to hear. My swap is essentially the same thing. The Kohler is rated at 22hp but I tached it the other day and it is running at 3150rpm at MAX speed as per OEM settings. The 22hp rating is based upon 3600 rpm so I can presume means that it's actually putting out less than the 22 rated. The Yanmar that I'm installing is probably the same as yours, also 18hp, but I know for a fact that this is a net hp rating.

Now, all I got to to is shoehorn it in there.

Hi Everyone. Well, IT'S HERE!!!!

I unpacked it and gave it a quick wash to get rid of the dust. It apears to have been in storage for a long time. The fuel looks fine, from what I can see through the fuel filter but it's red color. Kind of different than the yellowish color in my Deere.

My first impression is that it's noticeably larger and beefier than the Kohler engine. The Kohler is 624cc and the Diesel is .749 liters. Based upon the HP ratings, I figured that the diesel is same or smaller but forgot that the displacement is actually larger on the diesel. I get the feeling already that this is definitely a huge step up in engineering and reliability. Design is very clear and well thought out. The radiator on the top is a nice space saving feature. the 100% all Aluminum radiator reminds me of the BeCool radiator that I ordered for my Camaro. Reliability is almost certainly going to be better than I've had on the Kohler.

Motor is supposed to have less than 50 hours. How can I tell, it has no hour meter. However, based upon the condition of the hoses, radiator, coolant, fuel filter, labels on the hoses, etc, I think that is a fair assessment. There are some stains on the side of the radiator that is left over adhesive from tape or label that disappeared when washed. Apparently, this was a demo engine never installed but dolly mounted to demonstrate it.

There is an electrical box mounted next to it to allow it to start and run. The dealer kept the dolly, it would seem but I suppose that is fine as I won't need it anyhow. Connections seem rather straitforward. A hose that goes to fuel source, a fuel return line, which my application currently does not have so I'll have to figure out a way to add that to the current plastic fuel cell without leaking (any suggestions?). Also, there is an electrical connection for a transfer fuel pump, whatever that is but I'm guessing that this is an electrical fuel pump that will recirculate the fuel and eliminates the need to prime the fuel system. It also has a glow plug circuit and someone wrote on top of the elec box "glow for 10 seconds prior to start." 10 seconds seems like a long time to me so I'll probably experiment with that when I get it in there.

From this side, it seems like an impossible fit. Make no mistake, it definitely is larger. However, it IS a digital camera picture and with the new motor in the foreground, the visual perception is distored somewhat in the capture process and makes it appear to be larger than it is.
