John, the engine is going to the shippers on Monday and I should receive it within a week. Once received, I shall take pictures of it and give my initial observations and assess the obvious issues once it is here. This thread is getting a little long so I might post a new follow up post instead.

2 cycles are usually not governed. They fly right up to 10 to 12,000 rpm.

But, weren't we talking about B&S and T 4 cycle engines ? And hey, maybe even putting a diesel into a tractor that was originally gas? Come to think about it, wonder how that project is going?

See.. that's the point.. I wasn't talking baout the larger more advance 4 stroke gas engines that power equipment may use.. I'm talking about what my post originally used as examples... the little ungoverned things like weed wackers and such.. etc.

I don't intend to "obfuscate" but if anyone is really interested I'll attempt a SIMPLE explanation as to how 2 stroke engine speed is controlled without governors.

I'd like to hear that because I used to drag race a '77 Yamaha RD400, which was a two cylinder two stroke motorcycle, on the quarter mile(mid 11's at 118MPH... not bad for a 27 cubic inch engine). It apparently had no rev limit, as I destroyed it on several occassions when the throttle cable would malfunction and stick wide open and I wasn't quick enough with the kill switch. It sounded something like this...

Winga ding ding ding
Winga ding ding ding
WaaaaaaaaaAA
WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAA
WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAA
AAAAAAAAATINK!!!!
Followed by silence.:)

I often wonder what keeps my chainsaw and weed eater from doing the same thing.

I'm not looking to beat up on Soundguy but he did state "I'm not talking about the more advanced gas run engine.. .. just the plain jane push mower". The plain Jane push mowers have governers that are controlled by the wind speed coming off the flywheel. Even the $100 cheapo's from HD have these governers. 2 cycle weed whackers and chain saws are different, you are constantly controlling the throttle so I guess that's makes the user the governor. Lawn mowers are usually set and left alone.

Now more importantly where's the pics of that deisel? :)

Actually to get down to the brass tacks.. here is what i said in that fist message starting this side thread....:

"vs a simple cable operated butterfly on a carb'ed engine with no governor."

see that 'no governor' defacto.. I'm talking about an engine with no gov. while the push mower example was a bad example ( my bad .. I was thinking of more like a flyball or centrifugal type gov.. .. but an air operated lever is no less valid.. so I'll take the hit on that one..).. I'm feeling the weed wacker one was a suitable one however..

Hi guys, I know it's hard to wait but like I said, have a little patience. It's not here yet. I'm told it will go freight on monday 3/3. Was being crated up and that took a week, for whatever reason. I don't expect it here for about a week after the shipping date. I'll snap pics as soon as it's here.

Here it is 3/7.... :)

Patience is a virtue, right?

Hey guys, I'm more anxious than anyone else here as I've already paid for the engine, 3 weeks already. Got a call from the dealer in Ohio, who apologized profusely. Apparently one of the kids that works for him committed suicide and it affected him more than he thought. I take things at face value and always give folks the benefit of the doubt. Like you though, I'm still waiting.

Was told shipping time is 3 to 5 days. If it doesn't get dropped off at shipping station by end of next week, I'll start worrying. In the meantime, weather has improved dramatically and I'm itching to start my project.....

Ouch, gotta feel bad for the people who knew the kid. On the lighter side, did it arrive?
