They continued that same practice all the way to the mid 90's...because I have a motorhomeing close friend that sold the stuff! At some point they changed SLIGHTLY..and now you CAN buy "direct"..all you have to do is pay $$ and become a "member"! ( What a joke!!)

"If you are only interested in purchasing product for your own use at a 25% discount you may register for $10.00 for six months or $20.00 for one year. This is similar to a wholesale purchasing relationship with a discount store like Sam's Club or Costco.

Ten dollars gets you a six-month trial Preferred Customer membership for buying AMSOIL products at wholesale prices. Here is what Preferred Customers get:

1. Preferred Customers buy AMSOIL products at wholesale prices. If you buy $100 of AMSOIL products a year, a Preferred Customer membership will save you money!
2. Preferred Customers receive an information kit on AMSOIL products and the monthly AMSOIL product, racing and application magazine, the AMSOIL Action News.
3. Preferred Customer memberships may be renewed indefinitely for only $20/year.
4. Preferred Customers can register for 6 or 12 months and may upgrade to an AMSOIL Dealership at any time."

Ive NEVER seen in MY LIFE..an product that was worth spending ANYTHING on...even the "as seen on TV microwave bacon cooker" ( there trurly is such a device...lol) that wont sell on its own merits. Advertise it..and then stand back!

SO, I guess you'er not a member of cosco or sams club

There are several of us that like a top quality oil so, myself & a few of my friends split the cost of the prefered cust. membership so, it's no big deal for us . I also enjoy reading the magazine that they send out but, I guess you don't purchase magazines for fear that they may try to sell you something.

you forgot to add that you get discounts on oil analysis

Just curious, what do they (Amsoil) charge you for a UOA?

Since Red Line, Royal Purple and Amsoil are the top rated oils, and Amsoil is the least expensive of the three, their "pyramid" scheme sure hurts the end buyer doesn't it. If the fella who is soooo concerned about a "middle man" would please explain how he avoids dealers in buying food, clothing, autos, trucks, etc. etc., I wish he'd please tell. Otherwise, this constant rant about Amsoil makes someone look foolish.

I only bought it once to try a top quality oil, and it was far less expensive than the other top two. There again, I don't have the connections as the one fella who only buys directly from factories on everything. Maybe I'll see him at the scales buying grain at season's end. You know, that way he'll cut out the "middle" food manufacturers and grocery stores. ;)

Darla,

Top rated? Maybe -- maybe not. Depends on who is rating it.

Part of the discussion is about warranty denial due to engine oil. Use an oil that is not API and you can get denied. Not that it is likely, but the auto manufacturer would be within their rights. They specify that the oil must be API CJ (or what ever), and if you choose to use a "better" oil that is not able to meet that spec and your engine fails.... It's your bacon being fried.

I don't buy into the whole mystical properties of oil. Nor that one product is better because the company hawking it says so. I do buy into independent 3rd party testing and certification. I'm a skeptic.

As a matter of fact..NO..I dont belong to them! And Im the sort that..
1) Doesnt abuse my equipment..thence
2) I dont NEED to have oil analysis done ( free or otherwise) because I run a quality product AS DETERMINED by 3rd party testing...NOT the company hawking it! And change it per the makers schedule!

I do subscribe to various magazines..but did drop one because they changed their "format" and went to about 40% of their pages as ADVERTISEMENTS

Underwear I will buy thru the mail order ( after all..they have elastic waistbands...:)....SHOES and MOTOR OIL..nope!

That isn't ny quoat, but If you do a uao Amsoil vs some of the other oils you can see for yourself which oil will come out on top. There aren't many oils that have an oil with a 10 or 12 TBN out there.

D.P. I'll look that up for you

Most TRC oils have a starting TBN of 15. :)

I had to copy this because it expressed my own sentiments 100%

AND..I might add...the "fact" that API "wouldnt test" Amsoil motor oil because they had MORE "additives" in it..thusly making it "better"..is pure "hooie" if I ever heard it"!

So, I take it you don't care if you start to get coolant in your oil due to leaking liners, bearing's are starting to go out, air filter has a hole in it and is dumping dirt into your engine, thrust bearing's showing wear, piston skirts starting to scuff, cam starting to wear and so on? The whole point of a UOA is not only to extend drain intervals but let you know what is going on inside your engine before it gets to bad. I guess you just wait until the engine starts to knock or your oil turns to choclate milk and locks up.

As far as 3rd party testing goes. What do you think all the ASTM test standards are for? Just like NGLI standards, ISO standards and API standards.

"Underwear I will buy thru the mail order ( after all..they have elastic waistbands...:)....SHOES and MOTOR OIL..nope!"

That's more than I needed to know. :D

Well DP...in 46 plus years of operating my own "vehicles"..I havent had it yet! So why should I automatically "assume" that these disasters are going to start now? Never had ANY engine knock...never had oil turn to milk ( of any color) only ever had ONE engine "lock up" and thats because I had broken the camshaft! ( By close friend told me it was because of "7000 RPM out of a good 5000 RPM engine)....:)
