You should have been a ROCKET Scientist !!

Was at Canadian Tire just yesterday thinking about getting OIL for my Dynamo Hummmm when I ran into a snag. Uh...Uh....diesel oil versus gas engine oil ???? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Needless to say I walked away with nothing as all they had in diesel oil were individual quarts & at 10W-40. Wanted to check my NH owners manual but not much help there either. All it indicates is the API rating of SG-CE. So I came to the greatest single source knowledge database for TRACTORS & low & behold this thread.

They did have some Rotella 15W-40 but it did not indicate that it was synthetic & that's what I was looking for. Also it gets darn toot'in frigid up here so the numbers scared me off. Think I will check out the local TSC store. They should be more diesel friendly.

GSXR1100, you should apply for the Star Trek Academy. I'm sure they would love to have you. (Just being facetious) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Merry Christmas to ALL !!!

GSXR, the engines can't take any more......their liable to blow up at any moment !! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for the links. Answered my question as there is dino Rotella as well as synthetic Rotella.

Reviewed this entire thread once again & am leaning towards Amsoil or Redline. Even if I end up with something different at least I am armed with some info to make an educated choice.

Thanks to all who contributed their thoughts on this critical issue.

Happy New Year !

I would just do this. Look to see what oils you might want to use; then look for some oil tests when new.

I would stick to a group 4 or 5 but maybe a 3 would be ok if you are draining sooner then normal.

I would select an oil high like the following (I have some ppm for examples)

Iron=0
Chromium=0
Lead=0
Copper=0
Tin=0
Aluminum=0
Nickel=0
Silver=0
Silicon=4
Boron=70 (borate ester based friction modifier)
Sodium=0
Magnesium=1300
Calcium=3000+
Barium=0
Phosphorus=1300
Zinc=1400
Moly=0 to maybe 60
Titanium=0
Vanadium=0
Potassium=0

TBN over 10.

Just browsing the net for info on Amsoil & came across this link. Shows how 10 different oils stack up against each other using 7 different API tests. Granted this is on a Amsoil site so may be somewhat biased. Just wanted to share this. This my first time adding a link so hope it works.

I changed the oil today! 15W-40 Amsoil now on-board. Funny thing is, I was already using 15W-40 beause someone else had talked me into it a while ago. I had Valvoline "Cummins" approved in it. When I started it today it red lighted for a good 8 - 10 seconds. THICK AS A BRICK. I'm sure the Amsoil will do much better.

For reference, we lost water last night when the water main up the street froze. C..C..c.c..ccc..cc..ooooolllllld!

Also - I thought it was weird that it took all three quarts to hit mid way betwwen the dipstick marks. The manual states 2.6 crankcase capacity. But it took all three. Whatever, I fed it all I had!

BRING ON THE SNOW! (I recognize how lucky I am we didn't get dumped on yet. This was my first chance to get the fluid changed. I'd have hated starting the machine much with that old stuff in it.

THANKS FOR THE INFO! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When checking the dip-stick (oil level) with Amsoil, I park where it's level and let it set over night. I and a few others I know have over filled when I first started with Amsoil. The oil clings to the wall of the engine and heads and takes a while to run down. Just a suggestion so you don't over fill.

r0GuE - The Valvoline is a group 2 and a 3minus. In cold weather, that is a tough one to start. Amsoil will be all over that oil, big time.

When I fill my BX22, mine takes about 3.0 qts. I only know this since I buy in (1) gallon containers and there is about 1 qt left. Hence, you are fine.

Have you looked at Amsoil new gear fluid for the front axle? Fill for life fluid baby..... I bought the Series 2000 when I just got the bx since I thought it can't get any better..then it did! I check the fluid yesterday, smells sweet and clean as can be! hmmmm /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
