When the Taxation Party (i.e. the Democrats) took over Nevada state government a few years ago one of their first acts was to massively increase registration fees on vehicles - that "they need to pay their fair share" business. So this year the registration fee for my 2016 F150 was $478. Registration fee on my 16 year old Dodge Ram dually was $268.

They needed to build more roads down around Las Vegas where 99% of their constituents reside.

I'm glad I'm staying in Texas This year I paid $25 for the required state safety inspection by the dealer, then the tag renewal on a 2017 Ford Escape Titanium was another $75. So a total of $100.

In most jurisdictions bicycles that share/use the same roads pay no taxes/fees but due to the narrow tires require better road surfaces.
Most places let them ignore just about all safety laws like turns, stops and lights.

Rather than constantly boosting tag fees perhaps the time is approaching to get bicycles to carry their fair share of the tax burden.

Heck allowing a vehicle to run a red light (like a bike) when there is no traffic would be an ecologically smart move instead of a cash grab.
Idling cars use up petro energy and add to smog.

Florida decided to raise its tag fees this year. So mine went from $ 104 to $ 153.35 for the Chevy 3500 Dually. How's everybody else doing?

You're still paying less than us in Michigan.

In north idaho, i pay $51 for my 94 dodge work truck, $65 for 2017 toyota tundra and $94 per year for the 04 F350. Not cheap, but reasonable.

At one time I had 24 vehicle tagged but now down to 3... the rest are non-op registered for a one time $22 fee not to drive.

Is this a California "thing"? Never heard of having to register a vehicle that's not being used on the road. Why do they do this (other than because they can)?

It's been this way for many years but it was not always so...

A friend of dad's had a stroke and his pick up parked in his garage for several years...

When he passed away his son was settling the estate and the truck had 1400 in back fees and penalties to clear title... this on a 96 pick-up that had been bought new.

As far as I know CA is the only State that charges vehicle owners a fee not to operate.

I don稚 remember the exact numbers but trailer tags went from something like $40 to a $140 here in Illinois. Cars and light trucks are $151. 3 vehicles and a trailer add up.

Trailer plates went up $100 and vehicles went up $50 So Trailer A (3000#) went from $18 to $118. My trailer C (8000#) plate went from $58 to $158. My nephews Trailer E (14000#) went from $170 to $270.

I paid more to license my truck than I pay for property taxes on my home and 20 acres.

It does appear CA isn't alone when it comes to steep fees.

No one has yet mentioned the Virginia Personal Property tax on vehicles, so I will chime in...
Virginia taxes personal property at NADA blue book value annually. I think it is right around 4% or so. Cost me roughly $1,000 last year for tax and $65 for actual tags for my '06 Dodge 2500. Since it is registered for 10k gross, it does not get a tax rebate like vehicles less than 8k gross. Now my '02 Ranger was around $100 tax and $65 tags... Makes one wonder where the money is being used. My gravel road has potholes approaching the size of an old VW beetle....

Just the other day I sent in over 2k in tax payments.

A living quarters horse trailer is a huge part of the issue.

I think our personal property taxes are approaching our land taxes. LOL.

Only expect it to get more expensive.

That said trailer owners did get a break awhile back even if the fee has been subsequently monkeyed with in terms of cost and duration.

Current California PTI (Permanent Trailer Identification) is $10 and covers 5 years so we now know the definition of permanent has been amended in CA to mean 5 years.

Of course this is CA and the kicker is $10 for 5 years or pay $22 Planned Nonoperation Fee not to use your trailer !

My 2019 Ram 1500 was $508.00 for this year.. but my trailer has a "permanent plate" and only cost $10 for 5 years..

California is weird.

I just renewed mine for another year. SUV - $46. Ford F150 - $61. 10k dump trailer - $63. I can understand the first two, but the trailer kills me. I'll have at least 30 times the mileage on each of the vehicles compared to the trailer, but the trailer costs me the most.
