There have not been any new reviews posted in the review section for months. I submitted one over a month ago that has not been posted. Is the review section toast? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I for one, have really enjoyed the reviews, most are well written and thought out and give you both the pros and cons of their make and model. If it's still active I plan to write a review after I get my tractor but will probably wait until it gets a few hours on it.

I agree the Review section is particularly helpful for novice buyers. I spent about as much time reading the reviews over and over again as I did lurking in the other forums while I was making my buying decisions.

I think TBN should not only revive the Reviews section but spiff it up to be particularly helpful to newbies. Using some standard format for comments/ratings including a description of the reviewers own experience with other tractors would be very helpful. Reviews of attachments would also be very useful.

I'll have to check it out.

It's entirely possible that I broke it during one of the recent upgrades.

We tend to focus so much on getting the forum back up and always in top-shape that some parts of the site falter. Sorry about this.

We are going to open a redesigned reviews section soon. It's on the list.

I think a well designed review section would be a real boon to TBN and attract a lot of new viewers, especially if you can figure out how to get google to recognize it. I started on TBN via the review section. It is sometimes very difficult for a true tractor newbie to make sense of the various postings in the regular sections before reading some background material. I know you sell a book via TBN that purports to do that but with the internet age it is hard to wait for a book to arrive. Maybe you should consider selling a PDF version and market it via the review section. Maybe even offer a slight discount for the downloadable version to people who become TBN members. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am not so sure I would like the review section opened back up again. And if it was I don't think I would frequent it. I think it is just a place to start color wars and we don't need that.

To me the person doing the review on his own tractor would be biased and would not be a true review. Some here are dealers and they would naturally give their product higher reviews. Now if you have a company review different tractors based on certain criteria then it might be worth something.

Just my opinion.

Murph,

I understand your point and agree biased reviews are a potential problem. However, for a newbie to the site who wants to orient themselves, it would be very useful to have a few reviews of each tractor to peruse. Another example would be someone who has only heard a dealers perspective and wants to hear what owners say about a particular model. Of course there will be bias but that is not a sufficient reason to withhold the information.

I think a redesign should be done to capture important information that will enable the reader to judge how valid the review is. I don't want to see uncritical rave reviews either. I think only owners should be allowed to post reviews to avoid some of the relatively uninformed posts that come from either shoppers or color war participants. Perhaps even a mandatory "cooling off period" for enthusiastic new owners so posts were done after six months use or 50 hours or whatever. Standard questions like how long have you owned it, how many tractors before this one, how many hours, what uses etc would all be useful things to have in a review. It would also be important to allow the original author to update the same review even years after posting to reflect added experience.

I think a well thought out review section with appropriate moderation (the moderators already are supposed to screen all reviews before posting) would be a benefit to the TBN community. I dare say it would even cut down on color wars as people could be referred to the review section rather than starting yet another of the "what's the best tractor brand" threads with the inevitable opinion battles that follow.
