TC 35 Stuck on two stumps

I have posted another video on how I use my tractor, link belowr You will notice in the audio while manuvering my tractor to use my FEL/fork on the log a worrisome sound. metal on metal. I know the tube enclosing my drive shaft was dinged and maybe contacting the shaft as it turns? The sound is intermittent and seems to be more noticable while turning. Sound goes away if the tractor is stationary. Long steering tie rod between front wheels is contacting the front differential but not confident that is the source of the metal on metal noise.

Nice video, Cary. You'd be using chains and come-alongs to get that log in place if you didn't have the tractor. I was impressed with how easily you scooted the log up the ramps. I'm sure your back appreciates the help.:)

I did hear the metal sound you are talking about and it could easily be the steering rod, but it should vibrate when you are sitting still too. The noise just might be your front drive shaft cover. You should be able to lay a straight edge like a yardstick alongside the cover to see if it is bowed. Also, I hear a sound on rare occasions when I have a load and very high twisting forces on the front axle. On my tractor the sound is the fan rubbing lightly on the fan shroud. This has been reported by lots of TC owners. If you examine the inside of your fan shroud around the fan blades, you should be able to find any rub spots.

Really enjoyed your Woodmizer vids! Id love to have one. Guess it isn't hydraulic (toe boards, turner, loader). Too bad b/c that would make things somewhat faster. About the metal...could you find that w/ a less expensive metal detector? Anyway, thanx for posting those. BTW did you buy the mill new or used?

ETA: I would have also jumped on those old growth logs. Very, very nice!!!! Having a tractor sure makes it easy to load/unload the mill.

hello jimg,my only regret with my TC-35 New Holland is that I did not purchase it sooner. The amount of time I have saved with moving logs, boards, and buiding materials for my home is huge. Chores that took half a day are accomplished in minutes. For example, I dug my footers with a hand shovel, messed with that task for over 60 days a couple of hours a day. I wish I had made pictures of my wooden fork extensions that I used to move OSB to the roof of my home construction. Was able to raise boards to the roof line over 20'. In answer to your question, purchased the logmill new in late 90s. I have used a metal detector to scan for metal in my logs with mixed results. I would save more money on blades if I was more diligent with visual inspection and scanning for metal. Blades cost about $25/per.

Thanks for sharing the video. Cool that you used your seatbelt and parking brake. Hey I want to share a video I made of these gate pillars I made. I used my TC25D for digging out rocks, hauling them, etc.. Also, I used the loader to lift the capstones. Not pictures of the tractor - just the project.

Check it out!

I did confirm that the metalic rubbing due to stump impact was the tube cover for the shaft going to the front wheel drive. I used some wooden shims to move the bent cover about 1/4 back toward true alighnment. Sound has disappeared. Not a very good permanent fix,yet glad I have isolated the troubling sound. I was wondering if the shaft is bathed in oil within the tube and is it part of the oil circulation for the motor? Has anyone had experience removing the tube for repair and straightening?

The front driveshaft is dry in its shield, or is supposed to be. The driveshaft and tube can be removed together, then separated for the tube repair.

Tractor friends,

One of my old threads. Finally got around to taking closer look at tube that protects my drive shaft. Tube is bent and dinged and creates awful metal to metal sounds that I have endured for 75 hrs of tractor operation. Time to fix. Procrastination is one of my strengths.

I dropped the sleeve off the aft portion of the shaft going into the rear gear box. Looks like I will have to drop the shaft to,as well, to remove the tube for straightening. Any advisories. thanks
