No pics yet, but I went to a local NH dealer on Thursday. They looked up the service bulletin, and as I understand the bulletin, the clutch stopper is there to keep the gearbox on a 914 mid mount pto mower from hitting the clutch pedal. I was told there would be no harm in leaving the stopper off. Then the guy said he'd request clarification from NH. Here's the fax from NH:

Concern Description:
PTO will not stop with clutch pushed in with clutch stop bracket installed.

Symptom:
PTO will not stop turning when disengaged

Cause:

Clutch pedal stop set incorrectly

Resolution:
Adjust the clutch pedal stop

If, after adjustment, the PTO still fails to disengage, adjust the clutch pedal stops. The stop pin is located under the operator's platform just under the clutch pedal. The clutch pedal passes between two plates with two holes in them, one square hole and one round hole. A square pin is located in the square hole and is the pedal stop position for a single stage clutch. This position is also used on production double stage clutch tractors. However, if it is found that the PTO will not stop on a double stage clutch tractor where the clutch has been adjusted properly, move the square pin to the round hole.

I'll investigate that suggestion on Tuesday and update.

Sorry for the delay, but have been busy planting. With the PTO in gear and the clutch pressed past the halfway point, yes, I can turn the shaft by hand. The pic is the clutch stopper bracket, where the left side is bolted to the front and the right hole is where the clutch pedal shaft goes through the bracket.

I don't have a clue what the NH instructions refer to.

Your PTO is doing what is supposed to do and was corroborated by the test. You can disengage the PTO when clutch is pressed fully but why the heck limiting the pedal travel where you could not disengage the PTO clutch by the muzzle piece they added. By the way, nice design to limit the pedal movement... but why:confused2::confused2:.

Well, I do not think in any form or fashion you can damage the PTO mechanism but just simply disengaging the PTO clutch. You're good to go:)

JC,

Appreciate your comments. If anything further develops, I'll post it here.

I know some models.. like my 1920 has a manual little spring loaded lever you couls set so that you were only pressing the clutch enough to clutch the drivetrain, and not the pto section.

Soundguy,

was your transmission synchromesh? may be they wanted to give the operator a choice to keep the pto running ( a bit of independent pto flavor)and being able to shift up and down as needed during a long brush hogging session.

yes, I could clutch the drivetrain, leave pto running, and select different gears, ranges, etc.. engage 4wd.. use reverse.. etc.. all without slowing down the pto. Pretty much the same thing I see on my old ford 3000 with a dual stage clutch..

just press clutch half way to make drivetrain adjustments..
