TC40 w/ turn signal problems

   / TC40 w/ turn signal problems #21
On my 50 hour service at the dealer a couple years ago I mentioned the same symptoms regarding the turn signal switch behavior when it was wet. (I was experiencing the problem after washing down the dust from the dash area.) The tech at the dealer said he "filled the switch with grease" and I haven't seen the problem since. It's been almost two years.

Grease filled switches are a common 'waterproof' item.. especialy marine grade.

I'm willing to try it. Care to give this newbie some tips on how you go about removing and filling a switch with grease? The turn signal switch where the problem seems to originate is a...uh...is a "flipper" type switch (for lack of a better term). The other switches on my dash are the rocker type. Wish I had pic to help explain but my guess is that most NH's dash panels all use the same type switches. Is there a technique to removing the switches?

As always...your help is greatly appreciated!

I'v never 'retro' filled a switch with grease.. i always just buy greased ones or marine.. etc.

However.. I guess you could use a needle attachment then see if there is an opening inthe switch.. like wher ethe metal was folded.. etc.

Silicone Dielectric grese is the best... Vasolene would be my next choice for a do-it-yourself.

Just an update. I know the original posting was from a number of weeks ago, but I finally made it back to my property this past weekend. Cranked up the tractor and discovered that to my disappointment the turn signals were still off doing their own thing despite what position the switch was in. I ended up using the tractor for awhile when I suddenly realized that the lights were working properly. Guess the heat from the engine was what it took to finally dry things out. Had no further problems with them the rest of the weekend so I guess you can say that all is right in the turn signal world now! :D

That's how my lights got back to normal - I just kept working and (I guess) the heat from the engine dried up the moisture and they worked fine. Interesting thing is that they have kept working fine since. I think that is because the dealer gave me a new switch to replace the bad one. But now I keep it as a spare.

That just goes to show you that it probbaly was a moisture issue.

If it keeps happening.. I'd deffinately ditch the agravation and install a waterproof switch..

Haveing no lamps on your own property ain't bad.. but what if you needed them..like to get across a road. I'd ahte for a 6$ switch to add to the 'danger' factor that is associated with tractors on or near vehicular traffic.. etc..

Soundguy,

You're right. Now that the problem seems to have resolved itself (or at least I now know the cause), I have no intensions of taking the lights off. If the problem persists after raining days or giving the tractor a bath, then I'll know what caused it and pursue changing the switch out. Not being lazy on the deal of changing it out sooner. I'd just rather have fun spending seat time working with the tractor instead of working on it. Especially since I only get to my property on the weekends and seat time is usually a valued commodity.

I just sprayed my switches with some WD 40 and have not had a problem since.
