I am getting close to purchasing my first compact tractor. My locale NH dealer has quoted me a price as follows: TC40D, 4-WD, no SS, R4 tires @ 16,754.00 which includes the 1,050.00 rebate. 16LA w/HD bucket @ 4,000.00. 72” Tooth bar @ 450.00. 72” BL-6 box blade @ 590.00. Being new to tractor buying I don’t know if this is a fair price. He is also filling the tires with water, no additives. I live in south Florida so freezing is not an issue but what about rust? Should I not have the tires filled or do I need the extra ballast? The main purpose for the tractor will be to clear my property, which consist of large areas of palmetto and other assorted vegetation. Are there other implements anyone would recommend for clearing? Thanks.

Your price is exactly the same as paid 4 months ago. (less the the rear blade) I had an extra remote installed along with wheel wieghts and ag tires. A couple of thoughts, however.........#1 in Fla. don't you need a/c? If so, I have not been able to find anyone who has a cab and a/c combo for the NH. The problem seems to be adding a pulley to power the compressor. I do know that orange has a cab with a/c in the same HP range. ( if you've ever hit a bees nest when your working you know the value of a cab.) If you're agreeable to living without a cab have the dealer quote the sunshade (lid). #2 if you plan to do any loading, look at the grill guard ($100) .....it's a pain to get around it to open the hood, but it's the only thing between your grill and the side of that truck your loading.
As far as other implements go, a rotary cutter is a great way to knock down vegatation. Check the threads for various brands. A set of bucket forks are real helpful to pull stumps out with. Again there are some threads with pics her that explain them well. Lastly, I'd research filling your tires. The rims will rust out (eventually). Good luck!

I don't know nuthin about AC, we're in Vermont, but have several thougts re: grill guards, stumps and vegetation removal. The NH grill guard is more like $185 BUT well worth it. To me, it is not a pain but is very easy to raise and lower when needing to access the hood. As far as removing stumps, I think (hope) what you meant to say was a tooth bar and not forks. I don't think you want to be prying in the ground with forks (mine are nearly 3 ft long). As far as removing vegetation, I would stay below what the manufacturer says their rotary cutter / bush hog will handle. I think my Woods claims to take out 2" trees but has a crease in its top deck (blade spun up!) to prove that's a bit optimistic. I'd cut out by hand anything much over an inch and a half or so.
My humble opinions. Steve

Steve, I agree that lowering the grill guard isn't a pain, I can't imagine it being much easier. I don't know exactly about the price, but my dealer only charged me $100 for it as part of the package when buying me the tractor. Maybe he would've charged more if I had bought it after the fact.

As far as using the forks to dig out stumps, Bob was correct in say forks not toothbar. Have you seen the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=projects&Number=120670&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>Unbelievable</A> thread?

Make sure he uses tire tubes to hold the liquid. No problems with tubes. I have had a tractor with calcium loader tires for 25 years with never any problems. I need calcium up here in Maine.

I figured you veteran tractor owners would have some great advice and I was right. Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. I went to my JD dealer yesterday to comparison shop. I was shocked when he gave me a price on a 4610. Both my NH and JD dealer seem to be good, so it’s coming down to price. Once again, thanks to everyone!
