Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Ok. Got to do it now. Do I have to drain the radiator to take the thermostat out?

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Slippy - Maybe not, but it wouldn't hurt. Sometimes it's easier to drain the coolant in a controlled fashion than having it gush out all over your engine. I hope that's the problem, I bet it is. Got fresh coolant on hand? This might be a good time to change it if it's due.

Good luck, John

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

No, I had all the fluids changed before I purchased it last summer. I assume I will find some kind of drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. Can I use standard Preston 50/50 fix to fill it back up?

Do the tc models use the fw-15 addative?

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Slippy, you'd probably be OK with Prestone mixed 50/50, especially if your existing coolant is green. If it's yellow, it could be something else like Sierra, which I believe is propylene glycol as opposed to ethylene glycol. I wouldn't want to steer you wrong though, someone might know better.

If there isn't a drain valve on the bottom of the radiator you can just loosen the lower radiator hose and drain out just a quart or so - that should get the coolant level below the thermostat housing.

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Slippy, the drain for the radiator is on the engine block on the right side, below the hydraulic and power steering pumps. There is a hose on the bottom of the radiator that goes back to a petcock on the engine block. That is where you drain fluid. That hose is where we put in the valve to keep coolant from bypassing.

You only need to drain about a gallon of antifreeze and I don't see any reason you can't just put it back in once you are finished with the thermostat. You just have to drain the coolant down to below the level of the thermostat on the top of the engine where the top hose connects. New Holland recommends Winter-Summer permanent antifreeze. That's the normal ethylene-glycol blend. Our engines are NOT wet sleeve diesels and do not require low silicate antifreeze with additives.

When you remove the thermostat, you may not have to replace the gasket, but I'd take the safe approach and have one on hand before trying to take it out. Your NH dealer should be able to provide you with a gasket.

If your thermostat is like so many others, you won't need to boil it to check it's operation. You'll see the problem immediately when you remove the hose connector housing. You won't even have to take the thermostat out to see the little "dangle" holding it open. One quick snip with a pair of diagonal pliers and you'll be ready to reinstall. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

One thing I have learned, if it ain't broke don't fix it. If the cardboard is working till spring, use it. Tearing into a machine with these cold temps, and possibly causing another problem, or enduring the cold weather is your call. Checking the thermostat, and all the other recomendations is good to do.....IN JUNE! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Cardboard in front of a radiator is not "fixed," however it will get you an advanced engineering degree from several institutes of higher learning in the South. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sorry, couldn't resist. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

With such a well documented failure of the cooling system, why would you want to take a chance that your engine was not running at the designed temperature? I think this repair is definitely justified. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

As Jim points out, the drain hose is also the same hose that has caused the "cool engine" bypass situation. Once the thermostat has been checked/fixed, the drain hose problem can be checked simply by using a pair of vice-grips and pinching the hose off.
