Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

I was running my TC40DA last night digging w/the FEL & smoothing w/the box blade till after dark. It was @ or below freezing & the thermostat was nicely in the green the whole time. No bypass or cardboard. Possibly they have the problem fixed in the 2005 model or it just was not cold enough??

I don't think there's any inherent "problem" that needs to be fixed in any of the NH tractors regarding Slippy's cold-running engine, it just sounds like a bad thermostat, and I believe they are color-blind.

Maybe we could all learn a lot from them. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

I have a heated pole barn to work in, so work in winter is no problem. Time is the more difficult element. Since I am picking up a new gasket, would it be wise to just get a new thermostat, snip off the "dangle", and just replace the whole thing? I recall replacing thermostats in my cars when they have gone bad because they won't open up. Don't really know why, but replacement fixed the problem in those cases.

Also, can I pick up a regular ball cock valve at NAPA or Home Depot to install in the drain line? Anyone know what size?
Thanks.

Here is some ordering info from KCBarnes in one of the previous threads of the links posted by DocHeb.

I went the same way as djradz did and just fixed my TC40D with a ball valve and barb fittings bought from McMaster-carr online. It seems to work good. the parts I used were:4912 k47 ball valve and a pack of 5346 k16 hose barbs. Total cost with shipping, 13.64 plus the clamps I had on hand already.

The hose is 5/16" diameter. I used a brass fitting needle valve on my tractor that came with hose barbs on each end. I think I found it at an Ace Hardware store or maybe one of the big box stores like HD.

Here is the picture of KCBarnes fix. Remember, before you cut the hose, you will need to pinch off the hose on both sides of the cut or you will have coolant running from both ends.

Bypass Fix

As to the thermostat...
If that is your problem, cutting the "dangle" off will cure the problem. You won't need a new thermostat unless it failed due to other reasons. If you buy a new thermostat, you can probably return it if only the dangle is the problem. If I was doing this job, I'd fix the bypass hose first and see if my tractor warms up. If that fixes your problem, there is no need to remove the thermostat. I would not assume you have both problems. I did, but many others have had no problem at all with their thermostats.

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

When I did my 2120, I left the drain and cut the hose to install the valve. Looks like KC replaced the drain with the valve. Either way works, just makes removing the tstat, or installing a cab heater, a little less messy with the drain.

I believe the block mounted drain valve is still there. The hose going off to the left goes to the drain valve. The valve has a hex-head "bail" that will open it. If KC's valve is closed, only the block drains. If the valve is open, both the block and radiator can be drained.

When I did mine, I rerouted the hose to behind the loader subframe (over the top). I didn't like the hose setting out in the open as it is on the factory routing.

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Got it. Hope to get the project done next week. Will let you all know how it went. Again, thanks.

Re: TC40d won\'t warm up

Probably it's much better for the engine to run at its design temp the whole time after warmup, rather than depend on cardboard. It does work in a pinch, but it can't regulate much.

That cardboard is a "Hillbilly Winterfront" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
