Texas Fall/Winter thread!

I don't know who left the gate open at the Red River, but I am NOT amused! 12* right now, and will probably drop another degree or two, before the sun comes up. On my way to my barn, then to a friend's barn.

I hate to say it guys, but with this weather, I think I fit the term "frigid b*tch". :( If I don't now, I will before the day is finished. I'll be counting the hours until I am home in front of the fire, or under the electric blanket.

THIS is why I never complain about the summer heat! I'd rather change clothes 10 times a day, due to sweating, than deal with this cold!

Will have to wait until I get back home to try a Potbelly. There is one near my home. Ann Arbor has 3. Must be a college town thing.

The thermometer built into our heat pump system says it is 18 degrees outside but the one on the back deck
which gets more wind says 11 degrees. Normally it is the reverse of that since the one on the deck gets sunshine.
There is no sunshine today as it is snowing briskly.

Both thermometers are electronic and seldom if ever have the same reading.
Like in the real estate business, it's all, " Location, Location, Location"
It is supposed to be -30 to -40 wind chill by tonight.

I'll get the real cold report when my wife gets back from the horse barn. It is open on the back ( stall end side ) but having a roof, the front slider closed, the stall walls, the horse heat, and the poop heat makes it pretty cozy.
At least that's what I keep telling her
We do have to use a water bucket with a heater in it when it's this cold.
A two day affair. Should be in the + 40-50 degree range by the end of the week. Spring is on the way.:D

FG, I'm with ya on the "fence". As far as I know, we only have 2 members North of me and those 2 "old" guys have always let the "Southern" bunch down when it comes to closing the border gate:confused3:? :D I have little doubt our Oklahoma brothers open the gate on purpose!!

Hardest part of gumbo is making the roux, and even that isn't hard, just takes a little time. I usually throw it all in mine, sausage, chicken, shrimp and crabs (blue).

We'd had little, or no, experience with Cajun cooking until 1971 when we became friends with some folks from Baton Rouge. He wasn't actually a Cajun, but she was. And one of our favorite recipes is her "Cajun Shrimp Stew" that I still make now and then. The first time we had it at their place, it had both shrimp and oysters in it, and I really liked it, but my wife and daughters don't want any oysters, so when I make it, I only use shrimp. However, occasionally I've made it, as our friend from Baton Rouge did, using chicken and sausage instead of shrimp; same recipe otherwise, but an entirely different flavor.

And yep, I make the roux. As you said, that's the slowest part of the job.

Back when pick-up trucks were really trucks, with bench seats, this kind of weather made you hustle to sit in the middle of the bench instead of fighting for the window seat.
That way you were not the one that had to get out to open the gate.:)

And one sitting in the middle got to run the radio.
