I really think there are two types of people on this issue. Those who do text and drive and those who lie about it. Sure, is it a bad habit, yes, but I think everyone does it at least some.

I have never texted period. Mainly because I don't know how. I have been known to answer my phone when I am in the truck, but that's about it.
I do avoid sending longer emails and such while driving, and avoid texting in heavy traffic or heavy weather. I just figured I'd chime in cause the 70% or whatever percentage of people who do text and drive (in some amount) never really speak up.
Edit: i guess I see it the same as changing radio stations, drinking coffee, eating a birger, or anything else you do while driving

Eat burger, hold sweet tea, shift and drive was always a bit rough when I drove a stick.I don't text because my hands are full with drink in the right hand and burger/donut in the left. Knee is busy steering.
Ever start a cursing rant when the lettuce and cheese start to fall out of the bun when shifting and makes a huge mess?Eat burger, hold sweet tea, shift and drive was always a bit rough when I drove a stick.
The problem with that is it always messes up important words then you're back to correcting them with your fingers. There is a text option that lets you speak your texts. Though you're still distracted a few seconds
If ambulance had room to get around you, stay put. Maybe even put flashers on to indicate you're not moving , to show your intent. If going through light was only way to clear path, that's different. Answer to judge would be NO, I cleared only path for ambulance. Last thing they'd want is to see you t boned in the intersection and two more victims. How about this: Was stopped at a red light and an ambulance comes behind me with siren and all kinds of sound effect to get me to clear the intersection. So I comply carefully checking for traffic (was none). Cop pops up and issues me a ticker that cost me 3 demerit points and $150. plus costs as well as a contribution (mandatory) to a victims fund. Ticket was simply for running a light, seems that there is absolutely no exemptions. More than once I have heard judges say 'Did you or did you not' and 'guilty', no explanations allowed.
Wonder how many wrecks have been caused by cigarette ash falling in your lap...
Also distracting is a wasp, large bumble bee around your head, especially if allergic. Same with a large wolf spider on back side of sun visors hen you pull it down. Especially if it's in the run and you have arachnophobia. I've also heard of head ons due to a sneeze.
Texting is illegal in Ohio if under 18. ?? I've seen better teenage drivers than some adults.
