If it can't happen, we cut our losses IMMEDIATELY, and tell him no way. If we can't and some other contractor can, it's all theirs, and a steady customer hires someone else. That's life. You can't live and die with each job that walks through the door.

Well said!!! I've been reading this thread and don't see why it's anyone's business to ridicule someone for turning down a job. LC works for himself and as long as he operates an honest business then more power to him. However, I don't agree with the --Blamming the rich-- for all of the problems in the world.

The way I look at it is...

"Rich" man asked how much?
LC said X now or X+ later
"Rich" offers -X
LC declines
They part ways
No one loses any sleep
"Rich" man is still rich
LC is still in business
Case closed

Yes, that is right.

Ahhh.... not really.

LC sized him up accordingly. And defined him in a way that he might not be.

How do we know the potential customer did not do the same to LC?

No one gained anything, no one lost anything. But LC knows someone needs their grass cut, so *maybe* he has another chance at landing the customer.

TractorByNet saves me almost $300.00 a year. I canceled my newspaper as I don’t need the comics to read when it’s all here! Just very entraining.

Past tense used only because I was referring to last winter's experience. :) God only knows where they are or what they're doing today!

Or are you just trying to tell me that you are ONE OF THEM!!!

Edit: Yep... just checked your profile. Sure 'nuf... a Kubota!!! :D

Comics, business section, politics, and even something worthwhile from time to time ;)

YES!!!!!!, someone who gets it. LC was too quick to define the potential customer. Granted LC was tired and had plans which added to his judgement, but like you so eloquently said no one gained anything...in a situation where both could have won.

In my opinion lc did the right thing i am in the lawn business and deal with idiots all the time

So the proof that this guy was an idiot is that he wanted a 12.5% reduction in the price....PALLLLEEEASEEE. Where's your proof this guy is an idiot

I told him i charge 50 an hour and it normally takes an hour to do his lawn but this time it took 2 hours so its gonna be 100.00. He didn’t like it

I think we all agree if a customer is jerking you around or walking all over you, you needed to do what you need to do...but in LC case, this was not the case because he was not YET a customer.

think LC was dealing with an obnoxious person

How short sighted. What I hear a lot of here is, " I think the guys a jerk" " "He may be a jerk" "I had a brother who once knew a jerk," "he wears his pants like a jerk," " he has money so he MUST be a jerk" cmon use some common sense.
Definition of a JERK...he wants to pay less than quoted...HMMMM I guess all of us reading this should be considered jerks, because we all want tractor stuff cheaper than we are quoted by one dealer over another, or is it jus me...nah, it's everyone here.

Kendall... try some decaf for a while. Chill out man before you have a heart attack!
This is me on Decaf, you should see me if I drink a Coke of the waitress puts in Caffeine in my coffee by mistake.

My bad, I didn't know it was a joke. As you can tell two things that I am a huge advocate on are, customer service, and paying less that any price I'm quoted. If it can be negotiated, or even if it can't be negotiated I will at least try. Oh and by the way yes I have negotiated on a gallon of milk and got it.

To me this guy is telling Brian what to do and how much to do it for. When you tell a guy you will write a check for a price not agreed on then you are not negotiating, you are dictating the terms.

No - what the customer was doing was showing LC how serious he was with CASH, RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW.

I do it all the time and 99% of the time it works - I ask will you take X, and the person says no, then I say here look at this cash are you sure...then they say well OK since you are serious and have th cash right here right now. It also works on me. I sold some equipmet recently, the guy low balled me but whipped out $100.00 bills, my mouth started watering and Isaid yes before he could put the money back in his pocket.
Everyone knows about negotiation, some are better at it than others but most everyone I deal with negotiates, taht's the American and Mexican, Canadiad way.
Heck It's even the Kuwaiti way in the markets, down in Nogales in Mexico. Wake up - this guy was not from another planet he was doing what millions of people do on a daily basis.

Its the wife will write the check part that would have made me bust out laughing - if a dink wants to play how low you can go game and doesn’t play in cash - and then the big spender offers to have has his wife write a check - then its a dink you don’t want anything to do with - what a dink head -that’s way too funny

Ya, everyone walks around with $400.00 so then when they stumble on a guy cutting a field he can throw hard cash at him...UH HUH, YA, YEP SURE OK - happens all the time......Only a "dink" would carry $400.00 around AT ALL TIMES. Yea the wife thing was a little strange, but just shows who wears the britches in that house, nothing more.

Even if he was Bill Gates - who by the way never has cash or even carries a wallet according to an interview last week on TV

They tell me that it's almost always the people with plenty of money who either are extremely cheap,

It's sad that people think because smart people who are good stewards of their money are considered " extremely cheap"
These cliche's are getting tiresome.

ducati996:

Some of your threads.......
Looks like it's OK for you to instruct people or advise on how to " SAVE MONEY" but when this guy does it "He’s CHEAP"

......anyway you can find plenty of 4110, 4115 slightly used (or larger) with HST and you will save $$ in the process (OH NO ducati996 ADVISING PEOPLE TO SVAE $$$$$) ......Instructing others to be the dreaded "C" word.

Get the high lift blades (for lawn cutting) and mulching set up for the fall leaves. Saves money and not a PITA

SAVES MONEY ...again with the "C" word - to the gallows!!!!!!

All this guy was doing was trying to save money, the smart thing to do, and I can say without a doubt 100% of the people here have tried to save a buck or two....again we all must be cheap in your eye's, Uh including you.

Lemme see what was that saying, Oh I know " people who live in glass houses.........

Nearly every day, something reminds me of my departed father. He was a wise man. He started with nothing and built a good life for his family. No matter what the situation, he'd always have some "old saying" that fit the bill. I'm reminded of one now.

"A wise man never argues with a fool, lest the casual observer may not be able to distinguish which one is which" ;)
