I was thinking the same thing. I would NEVER weld the thumb plates directly !!!

I can almost guarantee that weld will crack over time. And if you need to repair the thumb or next buyer some day doesn't want it or you want a new thumb. You need to reweld. If the thumb ever gets losened up it could damage the dipper stick. That dipper stick is extremely thin.

If you must weld the plates I'd weld both ends.

I don't recall seeing bro-tek thumb slipping. But I just prefer the Wallenstein thumb design and made it work for me without welding. Wallenstein is thinking of adopting my sugesstion last I spoke with them.
