Thermostart vs magnetic oil pan heater

I hope there isn't a good reason why the self filling Res. is alot cheaper than the OEM. and find out it depends on your Fuel pressure. Looks to me Like it doesn't have a cap to fill it by hand so you would be using my setup having to fill it up :p Sounds like Turnerbend basicly did the same thing I did for half the price. For a New setup and 50.00$ I'll be glad to fill it by hand very time I needed to use it for that matter Esp. for my cost 3.00$ :p
Turnerbend Did your Tract.or supply store stock your TS. here in GA.??? Other YM1500 owners might find the Item # to come in handy if you still have it.;)

I went to 2 Tractor Supply stores in NW Ga. and each had 1 on the shelf. cost $29 after
7% Ga. tax.
My understanding on the OEM thermostart tank, you have to fill it when you first install. There is very little leak off from the injectors, but should be enough to keep a level after a period of time.

I was just messing with him. If you look at my fuel cap and his is anything close to mine that gets alot of fuel and pressure disharge. So much that I had to put a vent on it to keep it from leaking at the return line. Keeping a few drops or two of Fuel in it shouldn't be to much of a problem after filling it:)

Thanks for the diagram. My book has the same diagram but there wasn't any label on it so I did not know that was what it was for. My ignition switch died years ago so I just put in a standard automotive switch. That's why I am using a push button one for the TS. I can hold it in prior to cranking the engine and during start up. I should have the switch, breaker and wiring done tonight and we'll see how it works tomorrow. Got the TS and hoses finished today.

The only problem i see is that how can you you hold the button and the compression release and crank all at the same tims.

I thought about that to. If I use the compression release then the hot air that has been created by the TS gets sucked into the engine, the flame goes out and the hot air is pushed out the exhaust until I let go of the compression release:confused:. That is then followed by cold air through the intake. It was my understanding that the hot air needs to be in the cylinder for combustion. Maybe not. Will have to do some experimenting.

If this is not how it works, I can always change out the push button for a switch. Got plenty of them lying around.

When you pull the compression release you are no longer having a suction effect because your exhaust valves are being held open. Therefore, it will not blow out your hot air. Will probably work fine with the heat you create before cranking. If not, maybe you could use your toes.

OK, that make more sense than what I was thinking. I just sat on the tractor and guess what, I can hold the compression release with my foot:laughing: Think I will change the push button out for a switch though. Just got to remember to turn it off or I'll be buying another TS.

Can't try it out for a couple of day until the oil plate gasket gets here. I thought about just using gasket sealer I used on my dodge engine but decided to wait for the gasket.

It would still be cooling and losing the hot air IMO. That is why I run my decompression until my oil light goes out or oil pressure comes up and then I fire up the TS. That way you have good hot air to make combustion for a couple of strokes. It will fire right up like it's an 80deg. Hot Summer Day. There won't be enough time to cool the Hot air off before combustion ;)

The manual on mine states to turn the key to thermal start until light goes out, then pull compression release and begin cranking procedure. My light will go out in appx 10 seconds or so. Also, my thermal start is activated when ignition is in crank position. However, I really don't think the thermal start heater has time to heat up, start a fire, and warm up the intake before the engine busts off. ;)

My TS showed 12.72 in start when I checked. Which I figured in the way it was wired. My oil pressure comes up in about 5-6 sec. Imo. No reason to lay on the starter for no reason waiting for the TS to fire up. Cold takes about 10 sec. I don't have a TS light so I just count which is not a problem I'm good up to 21.

It's cold in the winter where I live in. My Kubota starts very well but I do use both a block heater and a magnetic heater on the oil pan on very cold days.

If I had only one option I think I would choose the magnetic heater that I bought at TSC for $30 or so. The block heater came standard with the tractor as the dealer in the MI UP puts them on all tractors.
