They started my new roof today...

In my experience as a Contractor, I've determined that Roofers are the second worse criminals in the Trades. Foundation Repair crews are the worse!!! I wont go into details, or what to watch out for since most of the roofers I've dealt with are for shingle roofs. But seeing that trailer, and your comments on how clean they are keeping the area, and that they had tarps with them, all indicate a top notch crew. The bad ones always go out of their way to show you how terrible they are, they can't help it.
I think you've mentioned this a time or two before! :ROFLMAO:

They started on roof today. Metal standing seam 1.5". They ran off different patterns but we liked the standard flat the best.
I cut this tree down overhanging the roof...not sure what it even is (wild cherry?). Then it started to rain! They quickly covered roof with a large tarp. They'll put down a radiant barrier (insulation) which should help. Black roof, black 6" gutters & downspouts.
Should be nice & last roof we'll need.View attachment 816074View attachment 816075View attachment 816076View attachment 816077View attachment 816078
That sounds like it's gonna look really nice! (y)

Several local roofing companies have trailers similar to that. Pretty nice for quick cleanup and little mess.

I, on the other hand, just finished stripping a small roof by myself. My shingle cart isn't so fancy. :ROFLMAO:

How hot has been been there, Moss Road? Our heat index was 103F yesterday. Wouldn't want to be roofing.

I did roofing for awhile, and while I personally enjoyed the work, it wasn't my calling.

It did give me a real intolerance for poor (roofing) workmanship. Water flows downhill, except when the wind blows or it freezes. So you need to plan for that. For some roofs, you are screwed before you begin because the architect made an impractical call about the slope of some valley that you can't correct, so you need to put a seamless roof under that whole area before you put on the visible roof. Not cheap, and nobody knows unless you tell them.

As @EddieWalker and @Fuddyduddy1952 mentioned, there is something about roofing businesses that seem to attract fly-by-night operators.

There is something about best practices for most tile and cedar shingle shake roofs that got lost between 1850 and 1950. I know that the way most get done around here are a recipe for early failure.

All the best,

Peter

Well, it was nice and pleasant... until the day I started the roof! :ROFLMAO:

Got well into the 90s the day after I tar papered. That was an exquisite heat! 🔥

I can understand that. I roofed our first house right before we sold it back around 1995. I enjoyed it immensely!

A few years ago we put an addition on our garage, 24x24, and I roofed that. I enjoyed the process so much that I stripped the old garage and made it match the new addition.

Just finished the roof on our shed last week.

I get into a rhythm and kind of zone out on the process. Before you know it, you're done. :)

Did my roof coupe years back. Stripped it and applied Blue Skin membrane then strapped it and applied the metal.
Picked up the nickname Smurf Castle because of the color I chose.

Looks like you did a nice job putting tar paper on. Like I mentioned to roofing contractor yesterday if just the tarpaper is installed correctly the roof is watertight!
