I thought I put everyone asleep by now.

“11..

No way. When I am having a hard time on my build , sometimes it feels like I’m losing the battle. Then I look at all you are accomplishing in this thread and it’s a good kick in the pants. Gets me chomping at the bit to get back out there.

It has been amazing how much Buckeye gets done by himself.

Many times, when putting up long 16 ft boards I have to nail something at one end to hold it for me. Like for the ridge, I nailed up an end support pole at right height, nailed scraps to both sides to form a pocket, put one end of ridge in pocket, then walk other end up ladder to it’s support.

Note in last pic the scraps nailed to fascia board, so I could lay sheathing in place to nail. And ridge beam support and scaffolding still in place.
I also see a temporary board under the left end of the fascia board to hold it.

I also humped all the 2 nd floor sheathing, flooring, etc up by hand.

19970331 Monday

March went out like a lion, very windy.

Since my rental house was close, after the back wall blew down I started to drive by and take a peek on my way to work.
This morning I pulled into the drive and there was a 2x4 laying in the drive. Someone must have taken off in a hurry, they stole ~ 24 precuts and 8 2x6x8s that were stored inside the front right room.
After this I started nailed a sheet of osb across the front door opening at night. I already had the front window boarded over.

Good news is electric was connected to the meter.

Im sure it tainted your mood a bit. I used to have rental houses and whenever they sat empty , even long enough to get painted between tenants, there were problems with theft. It gave me a dark perspective on my fellow man sometimes.

The expensive wood was the long stuff sitting outside (used up by this point) but harder to steal. Even then I sometimes nailed a few together on top, so someone couldn’t grab just one.
I had insurance, but the cost was under the deductible.

I have insurance on my build. I had wind come in and blow insulation all over the flipping mountain and break
Most of it up. I still find pieces when Im out in the woods. That was well over $2,000 to replace. I ate that. I learned a ling time ago that it’s best not to use your insurance unless you absolutely must. 6 years ago I had an explosion in a rental house of mine. Within 2 months I had a kitchen fire at my own home. My insurance company paid on both and didn’t drop me. But if I had been nickel and dining them on small claims along the way I would have been sunk

Many say, l built a house when they really just had someone build them a house, and they didn’t even GC.

Some of us can say it.

My wife works for a small US office of an international company. They know she is building a house. But they don’t understand that she is building a house.
For lots of people today, their tool box is their Visa card. Now, if I had the money, I would hire someone else to do the work and put my effort somewhere else.
You also have to look at how lazy some people are. Just drive down the street and you will see houses that need work that wouldn’t cost too much. But they are too busy watching TV.
