Last night I crashed the two day old BX25 into the garage door (which we just got this year).

Eh, one has to see the humor in that situation. Two years ago, while trying a way-too-tight parking job to store my tractor/trailer for the winter, I accidentally hooked the side of my shed with my equipment trailer, and literally tore the entire front wall off of the shed. The look of horror on my wife's face was priceless. I saw her, then turned around and saw all of the contents in the shed (new open-concept design) and saw the whole front wall laying on the ground, and almost got a hernia laughing. Then I fixed it.

What is recent....I know - I JUST stuffed my backhoe bucket through the front wall of my barn - friggin' thing sticks out way too far. I said "Oops", and kept on working. I fixed that too.

Last night I crashed the two day old BX25 into the garage door (which we just got this year). The BX was unharmed except for a few minor scratches, but the garage door and frame was completely destroyed. While we were removing the door, it started pouring rain. So we had to try to find tarps to cover the BX, but they were all too small. We tried the best we could to dry it of with rags, but I hope water did not get into the controls. Getting back to the accident...Our garage doors are 8'x8', but the opening is smaller. When I rolled up the door last night (we don't have an opener) the door did not go all the way up, so there was about six inches - a foot that was in the opening. When I pulled out I was looking at the sides to make sure the mower deck would not hit the frame, and I never looked up...Needless to say, I don't think I'll be driving the tractor anymore. (at least for a while) Now all I keep thinking about is all the attachments I could buy for what it is going to cost to replace the door...

I hope your Dad was more understanding and patient than I (unfortunately)would have been. I was pretty rough on my sons when something like that happened. I regret getting so upset with them because things like that happen and all my fussing, fuming and stomping around didn't help a bit. Just do your best to help with the repairs.

I have hit my basement entry door, my outbuilding door frame and cut a light off my trailer with the FEL. Don't feel bad its going to happen.

Well, to make you feel better yet, I'll tell you about MY boo boo.

About 20 years ago I cut raked and square baled my meadow several times a year. Did it all myself with my Ford 3000. Not even any help for raking. I also had to keep my pastures shred and was working a full time job on top of it.

One Labor Day weekend I took a day of vacation and cut my hay on Friday, then shred all day Saturday. My nieces had come to see us so after shredding until dark I went in and played cards or something until late with my kids, wife and nieces. I got up early the next morning to fuel my tractor and I was completely exhausted, but had no choice but to start getting ready to rake and bale as soon as it was dry enough.

My farm truck was up on jack stands in my shop with the rear end out of it. It was on jackstands at all four corners with the rear bumper at the back door of the shop. In front of the truck was my car in the other end of the shop only a foot or two from the truck. My field fuel tank was in the back of the truck and the only way to fuel the tractor was to pull it right up within a few inches of the back of the truck so the hose would reach the tractor tank.

I fueled up the tractor and started it up and in my stupor of exhaustion put the tractor in a forward gear instead of reverse. I eased out the clutch and it went forward just enough to knock the truck off the jackstands. It fell forward into my car. Think about that; I used my tractor to knock my truck into my car...... Luckily it just barely clipped the front license plate on my car. The truck wasn't hurt and the tractor wasn't hurt. The floor of the shop probably took the worst of it, but I have yet to see any cracks in it.

Even though my family members were all asleep, half of them came running out to see what the noise was. I was very lucky that the only thing really hurt was my pride.

Things happen!

What happened to the truck? :confused2:

We have 14' tall OVH doors on the shop building that tended to only be opened as much as the task called for (sometimes 6', 8', 10', etc). Once we had the tractor (knowing all the stories about ROPS damage), I made a bright red line on the door track with a sign, "Always open door to this point. No exceptions."

On the second day that we had our tractor this summer, while storing implements along side the one month old (brand new), metal shop building, I swung wide and grazed the metal building with the FEL pallet forks. Opened it up like a can opener. :mur: Of course, the tractor was fine, and it was only an 8" gash in the metal building ... but it is all brand new ... so much for pristine.

If I hadn't already read many similar stories on TBN, my ego might have been damaged. Instead, I laughed about how common these things are.

Pain in the butt: Yes. Nobody hurt, so not the end of the world. "It's only money; You can take it with you." "No use crying over spilt milk." :)

Electric door openers are typically under 300 bucks & should reliably pull your door all the way to the top. Sound reasoning to sell the idea to SWMBO (assuming you need such). Plus, you never have to waste time manually opening the door again

As I said in the post, the truck was fine, the car was fine except for a slightly bent license plate and of course the tractor was fine. The grille guard of the tractor had hit the solid back bumper of the truck.

I jacked the truck back up and got it on jack stands. I had it apart because it stripped an axle and diff side gear. It was a 31 spline 9 inch third member which is pretty tough. In the process it cracked the differential carrier case. I got another nine inch Ford center section and put my gear and pinion in it. Been running it ever since. It was a 78 Ford 4X4 that my wife and I bought new. I still have it and it is now apart getting a restoration. When I retire I plan on finishing up the project.

There are two kinds of tractor drivers:

1. Those who have broken something.
2. Those who haven't broken anything YET.

About the only way not to tear something up is not to do much.

As hours/experience increase, the likelihood of this decreases, but is never completely eliminated.

Awesome post!! This should be a sticky post for everyone to read lol!! Naturally, I fit into the second category!:D Ok, so I have bent a couple of things.

took me 2 hrs to break the first thing on my tractor (coolant drain valve) and in the 75hrs since, I have:

  1. bent right hand mirror bracket
  2. virtually destroyed the blades on my rotary cutter
  3. dented up the rotary cutter
  4. lost MANY pins and clips
  5. ran over a set of antlers (this didn't puncture my tire thankfully, just stuck in the lugs)
  6. crimped some random copper pipe next to the tranny
  7. broke a disk on my harrow
  8. broke the left hand coulter bracket on my plow
and loads and loads of scratches

its a tool ... don't cry over dinging a hammer on a nail, don't cry over using the tractor either

Hilarious, but true! :laughing::thumbsup::D

I haven't broken anything yet, but my dad has. :p... And my tractor lives outside! It works just fine.

It sucks, but your garage will recover, your tractor will be fine, and you'll laugh about this as you look back.
