Like others said, water will not hurt it. Tractors sit outside on dealers lots around here for years and farmers and construction folks very rarely put them in the shed at night.

By the way I have owned a tractor for 15 or so years and did just as you did this year. I keep my tractor in the barn with a 12' high door but was getting concrete work done so went to put it in the attached garage on my house and hit the door with the roll over bar. Just forgot to put it down. Destroyed the frame of the door but the tractor was fine.

Welcome to the club.:D

I would dare say anyone who uses a tractor has had mishaps. So if you didn't hurt anyone you are doing good. And now you are just like the rest of us. I was backing out of my shed and turned too quick and drug my Ranger out with me.
Had backed out of there 100 times, but 101 got me. luckily didn't do any real damage. Hang in there.

As others have said don't take it too hard. This spring I had tilled the garden and went to put my tractor back in my year old shop. I hit the hardi plank trim around the garage door. Stopped me dead in my tracks. I was looking at dirt that had fallen off the tires on the concrete drive leading to the shop thinking I am going to have to clean that up. Stuff happens:) Happy tractoring.

It is awful.....but, as so many have related....many of us have also had an awful moment of attention focused somewhere other than where the actual problem developed. Each person was doing their best to be careful, as I know you were, but something happened anyway.

Me, I ripped the door off of my cab.

Hope your dad is understanding, I know you feel terrible.

Am glad you stayed with us, let us know what happened. I continue to look forward to your future posts and photos of great things you are going to do with the tractor.

I bought a nice new (well new to me with only 23000 miles) Nissan Titan. One day while pulling up to a minute market, the guy in the space next to me decided to open his door just as I was almost parked. It took me only a second to look at him and I bumped one of those poles they put at the edge of the sidewalk. The air bags didn't go, but I had a nice dent in the bumper (plastic bumper, of course)

A couple month later I was told how I could fix that. I tried it and it worked quite well. My daughter needed to use my truck one day and got hit (she was OK) and it tore that bumper right off the truck ($8,000 to fix the damage - all that plastic and sheet metal sure is expensive). The shop did a real good job on the repairs.

Then, a few months later, I was tearing down a house and cleaning up the debris with our FT 360 DTC FEL/BH. I was being real careful. However, I still managed to back into my truck. I hit the front with the rear stabilizer foot ... and you guessed it ... hit that new bumper and put a nice vertical slice in this bumper right where I had the dent in the other one.

I also backed the hoe bucket into an above ground pool - one of those soft-sided ones about 4' high. The bucket didn't really hurt it, but the water in it sloshed so hard that it blew the side right out of the pool. Nearly washed my driveway away (dirt drive).

Look at it this way - you will probably never hit the garage door again - but your Dad will ;)

BTW - our tractor and all our vehicles live outside - they are just fine.

Lesson learned, move on. No one got hurt, you should be able to laugh about it in a few years... My dad didn't get my shop door up far enough and pulled his travel trailer out, buckling the bottom section. Couple hundred later, all is well. I make sure the doors are all the way up if I am moving things in and out, I learned my lesson from his mistake...

CompactTractorFan, there is nothing to do but grin and bear it. You didn't mean to do this and it will do no good to 2nd guess yourself. I know your dad is upset as I would be. I'd say just to take responsibility and know that you will do better in the future. Also, work hard to do all you can to help fix the door. Two years ago, I bought a new car and then let my Kawasaki Mule roll into the back of it and dented the back door. I'm 63 years old and supposed to know to look behind me before I back up. I just blew it because in an instant I forgot I had parked behind the Mule.

Tell your dad we all took a vote here and we decided if he won't let you drive his tractor anymore, we'll just have to let you drive ours. I think you're a great kid and I'd sure give you a 2nd chance.:)

Thanks everyone! My Dad was only mad for a little while. So, now all I have to do is take most of my life savings out of the bank to pay for the damage. :( I'm still allowed to drive the tractor although I'm not sure I want to...

CompacTractorFan,

It won't cost you your life savings EVERY time you run it! I promise!

Besides, after the hurt wears off, you know you really want to run it...

Just understand that your Dad probably wants you to do well, and he may be more upset with himself than you. He may be blaming himeself for part of your accident, thinking he might not have taught you well enough to avoid it. And paying for part of the repairs is often a way of instilling responsibility in you.

At least that is how I learned from my Dad. Sometimes I learned fast and sometimes it took a little longer. It's all a part of growing up.
