Funny, but when Craig was out here, he said he would cut the slab for me in exchange for the trees he wanted. Then after that first load and never coming back for the rest, there went that idea. hahaha

Let me know if he's game for it and when he's ready. I'm pretty much able to get away whenever, I just have to let my client that I'm working for at the time that I'll be off, or if on a weekend, make sure Steph doesn't have any plans for us.

This being self employed has a few perks!!!!!

EdC asked if I would post some photos of a pergola I'm building this week.

I went to the woods and cut down some trees. Then I peeled the bark and we started having fun at a bud's house.

He wanted something rustic. A little like the mantle I helped him make with some first cuts we had left over from some cedar slabs.

The cost of the logs isn't much. But the only thing I can compare with as far as the cost and labor is with stone work. Each log has to be handled so many times, cheezlouise.

First the tree is cut down. Then it's hauled out to the road where it's delimbed. Then I hauled it to the shop where I debarked them. Then they were hauled to the jobsite and manhandled into the back yard.

Once there they were first washed, then they were tidied up, cutting off stubs and grinding down uglies etc. Then they're stained. That is followed with choosing and fitting up.

Today we worked on the slats. We already had the beams and joists up.

We started with a bunch of trees at least fourteen feet long. We cut them to length, 160". It wasn't until late that we got to start trying to fit them up.

We put three of them in place. The next twenty will go much faster in the morning.

I bought this thing many years ago. I'm still on the original teeth that haven't been sharpened.

I tossed the guards of course. And to be honest with you, it scares the heck out of me. That's because what eats wood would probably not even notice flesh and bone. Think of having the end of a chainsaw an inch or so from your fingers.

Yesterday morning when I got on the job the client was on his way to the emergency room. He had slipped while the angle grinder was winding down after he let off the trigger and the blade went into the middle of his left hand.

Ten stitches and more pain than he had ever had before in his life.

How did you attach the posts to the concrete?

Since I don't see any bracing to stop it from racking, I'm thinking that you set them in the ground. If so, did you do anything to treat the wood?
