With the sync shuttle you have to clutch it to go from forward to reverse. With the hydro shuttle yu do not have to clutch it to make the swap. Most construction backhoes are hydro shuttle.
I do not think that is an option an the MX5100 though. It just means a little more use of the left leg.

Yes, you are on the right track. In my JD 5410 I have an A, B, C gear, A being slowest, C fastest, and then I have a 1, 2, 3, R (Reverse). So I can put it into A1 and be super slow to C3 and super fast and everything in-between (A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2), as well as AR, BR, CR, for reverse. I'm not sure this is the same scenario for Kubota but I would imagine something similar. They may have the left hand reverser too, similar to a full sized TLB, where you have the left hand reverser, flicking into forward, neutral and reverse, along with a couple different gear options but someone else will know for sure:thumbsup:

Hmmmm...need to push the clutch in.

On his construction equipment, I don't think he has to operate the clutch very much.

I'll pass this along to him. Need to make sure the dealership is telling him right.

He's planning on a test drive on Saturday and, if all goes well, a purchase. But if this Syncro vs. Hydro shuttle shift issue becomes something really sticky, he may reconsider. Need to discuss with him.

Just a thought, but if that MX5100 just happens to be the wrong tractor for him (not saying, but just a small risk), an HST version will sell faster or bring more in trade. Just a thought.

I am pretty sure the MX5100 gear model is not the hydraulic shuttle he is used to.. I believe you have to push in the clutch to change directions. Check it out for your self but I think that is how they work. Remember it is a "standard" model not a a luxury model. Lots of grunt for the buck, but missing some "frills". Like the other poster said the hydro will always bring more money at trade in because it appeals to a wider buying group. (like first time tractor buyers, that don't feel comfortable with a gear tractor)

Yeah sync shuttle gotta use clutch. As for doing the 100hr service cost about $350 if you do it yourself,I wouldnt even wonna know what it would cost for them to do it.(Hourly rate plus hauling to and from)

I think the transmission decision will come down to a test drive. I honestly don't know.

A question: Am I wrong or are all of the capacity ratings absolutely identical between the MX4700 and the MX5100? In other words, is the only difference between those two tractors 4 HP?

Another question: If my brother, for example, took the ~$1,200 price difference between the MX4700 and the MX5100 and applied it to the ~$1,500 price difference from Geared to HST, would he be giving anything up? Geared MX5100 to HST MX4700, I mean? Loader capacity is VERY important to him.

Another 'nuther question: Would he notice a difference between the MX4700 and the MX5100 in "normal" use? Lifting logs, moving stone, digging holes with the backhoe...normal stuff.

I believe the differences are going to be the Turbo, 3pt extensions. I think that's it maybe one or two others but the extensions are nice. I was looking at the mx4700 and decided to spend a little more for the extras.
