What type of valve is needed my a splitter do auto return of the ram hands free?

A "splitter valve" is made to do that.

Check "Hydraulic Supply" or Northern Tool.

A Prince Splitter valve sells for a bit under $200.

Be sure to match the valve flow to the pump flow (gal/min) or you will not be pleased with the sensitivity.

Usually called a "auto return detent", or some combination thereof. Here's one in 3/4", which is good for most splitters up to about 23 GPM:

If you have a smaller pump (e.g. 11-16 GPM), you might get away with a 1/2" port valve, which is a bit smaller and cheaper.

Ya, my log splitter valve has built in detent. But i have to manually stop it from fully retracting as the splits i do are 16” long and the ram is 24”. Dont want to waste time fully retracting.

My splitter is vertical. Dont have to lift anything. Just roll it into place. I sit next to splitter. Easy peasy

I have tried that. At this stage of life the bending over while moving heavy objects is well, problematic.

I use HIS name in vain far less using the pallet fork-based table top method.

When I get ready to start splitting I will have some young men helping me. I'll get the grandsons off the electronics and put them to work.
