tightening sway chains

Pins in: once you loosen the turnbuckle you can simple kick the arm off of them without having to make it fairly level to pull them off. Although, when putting the arms on it becomes more of a challenge. You will also have more chain stretched out to tighten up on making for a more rigid mount.

Pins out: you can simply pull the arm off once you get the implement semi level enough to lose most of the load. But with a wide stance mount on the smaller tractors there is the tendency for the implement to swing back and forth into the rear tires.

I like the pins in, but I'm too lazy to change the pieces I have that are pins out. :ashamed:

moving the arms out further to get in the balls which the chains were the headache there.

Actually I have to take that back what I was meaning to say (CRS) is when my chains were set for the bigger stuff they wouldn't fit the small stuff. That was the headache and me being lazy dont want to wag wrenches around to set my chains. :)

My stabilizer chains get loose and I find I have to tighten them down a couple times per day. I have chains on my turfs and when I hear that familiar sound of thesway arm hit the tire chain I know its due for a tightening. Anyone else have this problem? I was thinking of adding a lock washer into the mix?

Stopping the barrel from turning, using a locknut or clevis pin, is a good idea.

I had a similar problem: the aftermarket clevis, that attaches the swaychain to the 3-point mount behind the transmission, kept stretching. I posted a photo here after it neared breaking. I replaced it with an 'H' style chain splice. Thread with pics.

California...I have enclosed a picture of my chains. How would a clevis pin fit into the equation?

I see yours has a locknut, so my suggestion isn't relevant.

I should have thought of a better description. Lets try this: One variety of sway chain assembly has a slot in the 'barrel', the center portion, so both threaded tips are visible. One of my Yanmars has that type. And one threaded tip has a hole drilled across it, with a cotter pin in this hole. This prevents the 'barrel' from unscrewing. I hope this is a better description.

My old Kubota L3400hst had that exact thing.. a lot of the guys don't know what the little hole in the tip is for, but it is for a "hairclip". It worked well to prevent turning, and only took a second to remove and re secure.
