Tiller Tiller suggestions?

I'm looking for a tiller for my L3400. I know that I should get a slip clutch, especially because of the large amount of rock that is slightly buried on my property. I looked at the bush hog tiller (medium duty) but it's pretty expensive. I won't be using it very often. Maybe five days a year. Is there a good cheap alternative? My soil (ha, ha) is a little topsoil with mostly clay and rocks spread around.

How big an area are you propossing to till?

Would a plow be a suitable replacment?

What I'm planning on doing is first tilling a new vegetable garden which will be about 100' x 100'. Then I plan on tilling my entire 5 acre field over the next 20 years and seeding it into something that I can mow with the finish mower rather than the bush hog. I don't think a plow would be a good alternative unfortunately. Thanks.

I've seen a few grey market tillers around that looked like they'd seen their better days, and the general price seemed to be about $500 and they were smaller units... 4-5'. Even though I'll never use a tiller many times a year I couldn't make myself throw out that much when they looked like junk. You may be lucky and find a "cheap" tiller. I gave up and bought a new Howse RTC 70; I think the price through my MF dealer was less than $1400 total. Howse' website price is $1776 plus shipping. Others I looked at were near 2K.

I was in pretty much the same boat as you (gravelly, rocky soil, though) and ended up with a tiller. By the time I had priced out a plow, a set of discs, probably would still need a harrow of sorts to smooth things out.... dropping $1200 on a new KK tiller started making a lot more sense.
I bought it for the same purpose, to start a garden and eventually smooth out and reseed my back field.

Around here the grey market tillers get scrapped out for the tines. I had a 5' gave to me without the tines. I shouldn't have taken it. Now I'm making a new rotor shaft to take the newer 2 bolt flange style L tines that are available at mundo expense. Also had to buy a pto slip clutch, make new 3pt extend attaching lugs as most of the little grey's set to close to the tractor making the pto shaft at severe angle when pick all the way up. The bottom line is I guess I must of really wanted a tiller bad to go thru this kind of labor and expense. If time and money are issues a buying a new tiller can be the right choice in the long run. Just my hind sight. bjr

Bought a Howse RTC 62 ($1475) and used if for the first time this weekend. What an amazing tool. Saw on used by the contractor who put in culverts and covered my front ditch. Had to have one after that.
