I have a low rear tire on my L175. When I attempted to put air in, it would not accept it. This valve is sort of a step down (?) metal valve that has two 'serrated' twist (?) locks and a regular air valve as the end result. Would this be filled with other than air? The rims themselves look in perfect condition...no sign of rust or other problems. The tires also look in very good condition. I know the air compressor is ok and had been set at 100psi from a prior job. I also aired up a pickup tire to 45#'s, so I would guess the inside pressure of the tire is sufficient, although it wouldn't register on an air gauge.
What's up with this thing, am I missing something here?

Scruffy, that's not too unusual a problem and it's difficult to tell without seeing it. It can be either the valve core in the tire, or the air chuck that you're using. If it won't take air from your air chuck, and it won't register on the gauge, then I'd suspect the valve core (unless the tire's simply too low on pressure to register on the gauge). Does it look like the little stem in the center of the valve core is standing up straight, and close enough to the end for the air chuck or gauge to open it by pressing it down when you put them on it?

Bird, From the angle I was at, (valve on inside of rim) it
appeared normal from what I could see. I will have to crawl under to get a good view, the valve did (in retrospect) seemed further recessed than normal, but I remember the initial pssst .... no that was the pickup tire.
I suspect you are right....and the problem will be a mating between the valve and the air chuck. I will pick up a new valve for the stem, matter of fact I should have a new stem or two around here that I can rob one from. Sure was a puzzler, made me look at the air compressor with a 'jaundiced eye'! But that thing is a new one, just a couple months old.

Yeah, scruffy, they have to match up. The center piece in the chuck has to open the valve core in the tire, and the valve core stem has to open the one in the air chuck. Of course, I have several different styles of air chucks and have occasionally found all I needed to do was use a different chuck (which really should never be necessary). And then, of course, just getting on the valve stem straight can sometimes be awkward on things like dual tires, valve stems on the inside instead of outside, etc.

Scruffy,
Can you manually press the tire's valve stem center and release air? Just a thought.

The air chuck that I was using is one of the 12" shaft type used for duallies. I will try one of the shorter ones before replacing the valve core. Hate to get that turkey out and not be able to refill it! All I have then is a tractor setting on a block, and I'll be eye-balling it with a jaundiced eye, as well as considering painting it blue! I retried it, and it does seem to try taking air, but only for a very short moment. Almost like it is plugged. Well, time for a core, after I try another air chuck...like you, I have a 'pocketfull' of them around. (cheap christmas presents, that everyone thinks of!)
