Tires tires /wheels

Good description Whiskey. Just steal the wife's cloth measuring tape from her sewing room jack up the tire and measure it. Then compare that to the tires on Firestone and Goodyear web sites. You could also measure the front tire calculate the ratio and if you have to go to a different tire for the rear replace the fronts also.

( I guess you are saying I can go with the same height or shoter tire & wheel, just no taller .is this correct? )

You could go taller or shorter but your front tires would have to be changed accordingly. If you were to change your rear tires that were taller, they would be covering ground faster than the front wheels and the front wheels would essentially be skidding some. If you went smaller on the rear then the fronts would be going faster and would probably spin a little. Either way there would be stresses on the drive train that in time would result in something breaking. If you have ever forgotten to disengage the 4 wheel drive and tried to steer a vehicle on pavement then you know what it feels like. Going with a wider tire on the rear won't hurt anything as long as the diameter does not change.

thanks for all the info guys.if I can come up with all of the material ( tires& wheels the same size) adapter plates etc, I'm going to go for it.
ps, you should make those adapter plates and market them.

I have talked it over with a friend of mine with a couple of CNC machines. Just don't seem to have the time for it right now. But if one were to need some I might be able to get my arm twisted and make a pair up.

If you are going to buy big wheels ,why pay for wheels and adapters? Hey will make wheels that fit cheaper than you can buy wheels that don't fit and still buy adapters.

In my case I got the tires Gooyear TerraTrac brand new and the rims for 272.00 delivered to the door. Added about 80 bucks for the plates I made so for 350.00 I put some nice wide tires. I'm sure the tires alone would have cost well over 500.00 for the pair without the rims so at least in my case it worked out better.

It's actually a liitle more complex than figuring the circumference of a circle. This should be based on "rolling circumference" which takes into account tire flex, etc. A crude way to determine this is find a flat paved surface (or nice flat hardpack, mark the tire where it meets the ground and mark the ground - drive the tractor forward three tire revolutions and measure the distance on the ground and divide by 3 to get an average. It's different that tire circumference because the tire flexes and squishes as it rotates. Do this for your front and back tires to establish the ratio.
Firestone lists rolling circumference on their website http://www.firestoneag.com. If you want a better explaination of how to measure rolling circumference - click on the "Lead/Lag" tab at the bottom of the Firestone site. They also explain my previous point that the front tires always are designed to be in the "lead" by 2-5%.
As long as the ratio beteen front and rear tires remains the same as original ratio - you can put any tires on that thing that will fit under the fenders!

Ok, fine. I was replying to using the wifes sewing tape measure!!! I think if u used the circ. and kept the ratios the same u'd be ok without doing all what u said? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
