This is a turn around that I never expected to see......Most Vet Days, we come on the various forums and salute ourselves. Have never experienced this feeling and honestly don't know how to handle it. I come from those folks that were spit upon for doing our DUTY back in the 70's...6-5-65>>>7-5-75. Was a COLD WAR warrior mostly and then got hurt and discharged. When I got out of the hospital for my first "day pass" to go to downtown San Antonio for some "fun", while waiting at the bus stop was spit on as folks surrounded me and let me know that they didn't appreciate baby killers......
Carried this, like Richard, even until now. The treatment of the Desert Storm Warrior showed me the world appreciated them just like they did the WWII guys and then the warriors of today get that ongoing love and respect that this country owes all of us.....Not expecting anything as the healing process is slow.
Today, went to my grand daughter's elementary school program for vets.....Stand out in front with all the other invited guests/relatives while they sang, read thanks and what to them a vet is, and pledged to the flag after the Star Spangled Banner. All made me so proud to be there and to actually be saluted by them. My baby doll princess taking my hand and going down the hall to the cafeteria for breakfast was and is priceless for HER pride in her warrior.
Her class invited me to speak about what I wanted so gave a brief summary of my various duties and stations over my 10 years. Like Eddy, I would not be who I am if I HAD NOT SERVED. We are special, made that way by our service to this country. Finally this old guy has seen a country that is actually, for real, and proud of those who were and are their warriors.....My brothers and sisters, I SALUTE YOU.................God bless these United States......Dennis
I was lucky enough to end up in Germany in 1970. I made a trip home during my tour and made the mistake of coming through NYC. Those snarling, snivaling pukes had no clue. My former friends did not know what to make of or how to deal with me not to mention those coming home from Vietnam. I dropped them and to this day while I have aquaintances that I can call on and vice versa, I do not "pal" around with anyone. I learned not to mention the word "era" during a job interview.

I thank President Ronald Reagan for changing things and bringing some much needed dignity and respect to soldiers from that era.

It was only in the last few years and a move to KY that I started attending any ceremonies. I do not see to many of an age that I would associate with our current conflicts. My stepson who was in Desert Storm wants nothing to do with anything. But then he has had to fight with the VA to address his health issues and he has plenty.

Anyway, my wife and I went to one of our favorite breakfast places today, Bob Evans. They were offering free but limited selections for vets, no ID required. The waiter handed me the "short list" and apologized that drinks or any extras would be an additional cost. I told him that the same as serving was a privilege and not a right. I had my crossed cannons hat on that I only wear on veterans day so of course people were thanking me for my service. I have heard that some are offended by this? I just say thank you for appreciating our service people. With most of the vets, wearing some sort of hat or not, it was a simple nod of the head which is all that need be "said".

Happy Veterans Day everyone, and thanks for your service.

Picture of my dad (2nd from right with US above his head), age 91, WW2 veteran. Landed on omaha beach a few days after Dday, and fought their way thru france and into
Belgium. Was in the Battle of the bulge, and still talks about the cold & snow that winter. My Grandfather was a WW1 veteran.

M110. During training at Fort Sill, we drove by one in a gun park one day. I asked my sargent what kind of piece it was. He told me that it was an eight inch but not to worry, "they" are pretty much obsolete. Anyway, I got to Germany and met my sargent who exclaimed, welcome to Germany. You are my new driver. Okay? Next, we went to the gunpark and I learned that the driver also pulled the lanyard. So, you can add CC to the DAGB, lol!

I always wonder. Does it not bother Vets, how the countries (and western way of life) they fought and died for, have been slowly given away?

If the Vet's heart is in the right place it doesn't at all. A true Soldier/Marine/Sailor/Airman, WAC, whatever you wish to insert, understands that his/hers is simply "to do or die and not ask why". :)

It's those that second guess everything that often muddy the waters for the Veteran. When that happens the individual Veteran is blamed for whatever doesn't seem right. That's when we as a society begin to unravel. :)

I guess that's why I would be unfit for service. In my mind, things are unravelling. At least here in Canada, and it both disturbs me and saddens me a great deal.

My original Trade was FC (Naval gun Fire Control for those unfamiliar), or, as we called it "a Bos'n with a hobby". I used to love pulling the Key (trigger), especially for a 'broadside' of 3 rounds.

Ahhh... the smell of cordite!
