In all conditions....

Forgot to add: back in the mid 1980's I had a Zuzuki. This was when few vehicles had four wheel drive. On the icy street light stops it always made it across the intersection first. Could be quite amusing at times.

The nice thing about the 700R is it doesn't require a computer, so it gives you a quick launching 1st gear and a nice overdrive to drop the RPMS for cruising in an older car. Today, if you're going to go to the trouble of putting in a modern engine like an LS with electronic fuel injection, you may as well go with a modern transmission too.

What ever happened to the 413 ahead of a 747 ?

Last winter I had one of our Cruze Turbodiesels with newly-mounted winter tires. We got an early AM snowstorm so the first commuters just packed it down and turned it into ice. Traffic was a horror show.

Got off Rt 93 onto Rt 28 in NH. At the next light a Cadillac Escalade and an F250 both nailed it on the green light and started spinning their wheels: the finest "no-season" tires at work.

At the next light where there was three lanes I pulled up next to them, and just drove away without even spinning a tire [General Altimax Arctic]. Never understood why people spend $50,000 on a truck and use lousy tires.

I agree. A set of snows is cheaper than a deductible and your lost time even from just a fender bender in most cases...

I would go with a 2 speed power glide. You should be able to get a good one for a weekend street/strip tire smoker without breaking the bank.

A 700R will launch faster and be so much more streetable because of the overdrive. Compare the gear ratios.

The 700R4 and it's improved electronic offspring such as the 4L60-65-70E's are great transmissions. But a lot of racers and street guys like that the "200 4 R" still has a low first gear and has closer ratios that work well with smaller engines that have smaller power curves. Having said that, the Electronic controlled 4L series are my favorites.

Good read. Thanks!

The 200 appears to be the same length as the 350-400, so that would be a plus in a transplant. The 700 is longer. I like the launch from my 700/4L60E's. I usually don't get past the shift to second point comparison much in town!

Well, We are talking two different directions as I wouldn't be concerned with a overdrive. As far as a hard launch, I would be more concerned with my convertor (and few other things) than my first gear ratio.

That gear ratio chart is quite interesting. It made me look up my gear ratios which are:

R-Spec / Ultimate model
Gear ratios :)1) 8AT
1st 3.964
2nd 2.468
3rd 1.610
4th 1.176
5th 1.000
6th 0.832
7th 0.652
8th 0.565
Reverse 2.273
Final gear ratio 3.909

This gives me a big advantage over higher hp cars with 4 speeds in the 1/4 mile.
