Tiller too much tiller?

Mark & Wen, The thing about this is, I bought this at a Tractor Supply, which is not exactly a bad thing. The only bad part is, the people selling may know nothing about what they are selling. I have looked over this thing and find that there is nothing to give in case of a jam up. Definately something is going to have to break, and I sure don't want it to be my nice new tractor. I think I would rather have a shear bolt than a clutch anyway, then there will not be a freeze up when you are not aware. If I could get an adaptor for the front of the gear box, and change one half of one universal it would probably be OK, then I could use a sheer bolt. But it would be much easier if they supplied a PTO shaft with a clutch on it.

Bud, some of Tractor Supply Co.'s employees may not know a lot about some of the implements, but I've found they were very good about either correcting any problem or refunding your money. I'm still guessing, of course, but sounds to me like you just need a different drive shaft; one with a shear bolt.

Bird, I wouldn't want them to be too quick to give me my money back, I'd rather keep it. I hope I can get a PTO shaft with a clutch. I saw pictures some place where they show a spilined shaft, and also a smooth shaft with a hole in it on the front of the gear box. I brought it home and sanded and painted all the rust spots, looks a lot better now. Lucky enough, the paint matched perfect. It will probably take a while to get the paint worn off the tillers. I only have a 2000 sq. ft. garden. One more question. When the time of your message is posted on my computer, is that your time, or mine?

Bud, all the times posted on the board are Eastern, so since I live in Central, the times shown are actually an hour later than when I posted them.

Bud, there is a site at http://www.ssbtractor.com/ that sells Agric tillers. Intheir description they say "The standard universal joint can be supplied with a clutch or bolt limiting device upon request." It sounds like they can be bought without any type of shear bolt or slip clutch. That is my interpretation anyway. I think I have the same problem but it is 101 degrees in the shade and I'm not going to check until it cools off a little.

Nope. All tillers will eventually have the irresistable force meet the immovable object (rock or log) and something is going to slip or break! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
