I remember first hearing it as a slang insult back in the late 60's/early 70's when I was 8 or 9 years old. I'd heard it again a few times in high school. It was considered quite derogatory around here and rarely used. Didn't hear it again until around 1987 when an electrician asked me to hand him a pair of dikes. I had no idea what he was talking about until he clarified diagonal cutters, which is what I was taught in electronics school. Then, of course, we proceeded to discuss the other meaning of the word and never to say it too loud when talking about tools as some might find it offensive. So, yes, it was a crude insult at least as early as 60's/70's and continues to be when used that way. Lot's of stuff we shouldn't say, or think, for that matter. It all comes down to context.

I got into a discussion with my daughters about such an issue just the other night. They asked me my opinion of a current topic that is taken a completely different way by their generation as mine takes it.

I got out of that trap by telling them "I think it is an over-reaction to an issue that is very important."

While they pondered their dad's response, I got up from the table and went and did the dishes as fast as I could. :laughing:

As I said this is my favorite tool, of ALL Tools. It was made by UTICA. Duckbill Pliers. You can't buy them any more. Anywhere: Not as exact or as well made as this one. Copies are not the same. This one tool has made me, saved me, more money then its cost a thousand times over. And its just a little hand tool.

I’ve only heard the term dikes referred to as cutters and water walls. I personally call them side cutters or nippers. I’ve had Klein, Channellock, and dozens of other cheaper pairs. My 10” Knipex cutters are hands down the best. I like my Klein needle nose better than my Knipex needle nose. You can spend a grand pretty quick but quality hand tools make all the difference in getting the job done quick and painless and having a stuck drain plug and over 1000 post.

This is my personal all time best tool. They are called Duckbill Pliers, and rather hard to come by these days. This is the single tool that has saved the day for me when nothing else worked.

What do those do that you can’t do with a beefy set of needle nose or regular pliers?
