Toro Workman 3200 project...anyone have one of these?

Just pulled an Industrial Toro workman in the yard, carb issues. Got surprised with several nice options.
Bed hydraulics were expected till I bought an Industrial Toro in KY..., todays Industrial Toro has them, as well as the high/low range tranny, rear aux hydraulics and for the first time, I have ever seen a rear PTO in real life! The KY Toro Workman Industrial out of KY has none of these options, but it does have a cab and is a running unit. I think not having carb issues may be related to it being a propane unit. Todays Toro Workman Industrial is a gasoline powered unit.

I have a carb kit sitting on the table right next to me. Now, it might not be the right kit, as I haven't opened it, but the guy who promised me he would rebuild mine told me what kit to buy. He has had good luck building those carburetors so far. He found a new rebuilt whole carburetor last year when the parts started showing up and bought it for less than $200 delivered. Now the prices have more than doubled due to demand and inflation. I think a whole carb is still available from Toro, for about $1500, which makes it kind of NLA!

I see carb kits on eBay for $150 + tax. Clutch friction disk at nearly $200. Yikes.

Anyway, then engine/trans is out, and on the floor of my workshop. I used my front 3-pt on my loader. The hangup was one of the half-shafts U-joint yoke would not slide off, so it came apart while lifting. This is gonna be tough to align when putting this back in.

Mitsubishi was nice enough to provide one lift hook, but not 2. So I used the thick steel bracket that supports the air box.

Dfkrug,
Nice pictures of the removal. I am going to have to do that soon enough. Not sure when, probably this winter if I can find some time to work it in. The alternative is to load it up and haul it towards TN and have my TN friend meet me somewhere around halfway. We will need to find someone with a loader that is willing to unload both trailers and load them back up on the other person's trailer. There is a chance that we could do it with winches, but some of these things don't roll for squat!
Ebay is where I got this carb kit sitting on the table next to my ez chair. I probably should open it, just to make sure that it looks like the right kit. I think it was $170 when I purchased it.
The Toro I dragged home today had the carb taken off by the guy I bought it from, but he had only pulled it and started to open it up when I emailed him about buying it. He only had one picture on Craigslist, and not a lot to say about it, other than front tire leaks down quickly, ran at idle before he pulled the carb off, hydraulic bed works, lights work, needs a carb cleaning and has a 3 speed manual transmission.
If he had put high/low range in the description, i would have given him a few bucks more for it. If he had put rear pto in the description, or took a picture that included the rear pto, I would have given him every penny he was asking for it, without question.
My KY Toro that is in TN, (We name them by where we find them so when my TN buddy refers to one, we both know which one is being discussed) is currently getting a partial rewire, as the heater switch connections got loose, and the high resistance melted the wires going to the blower motor.
New switch, new flexible heater hose (2.5") and one of the blower vents if we can find one. With all that replaced, it should blow enough heat to keep that little cab warm for my Bride when She runs it across the street to her Mom's house. It doesn't get that cold in Florida, but my Bride very much dislikes cold weather!

So, the engine/trans is out and on the floor of my workshop.

I did drain the hyd oil sump first, but there is still some ATF in there. I pulled the hydraulic inlet filter screen, and boy was it full of metal flakes. A magnet told me it was mostly ferrous, rather than aluminum or sleeve bearing material.

I stuck my finger in the filter opening and brought out what was below the filter. Wow.

That is a 48mm socket, used to remove the filter.

I opened the transmission, and the problem was obvious immediately: A disintegrated ball bearing. All that remains of the balls and cage are 5 balls, ground down by 2/3. The aluminum case is hollowed out quite a bit behind the bearing, but not enough to go through.

So, I harvested the bearing and the 2 outer gears on the countershaft. The old gear and its replacement are shown side-by-side. I would have replaced the aluminum cover, too, but the old one got corroded by sitting out in the weather since a year ago when I took it apart.

The amount of debris in the oil is so great that I wonder how the hyd pump still works. I see the differential pinion gear is scuffed a bit, but still serviceable. I bet the hyd filter is clogged.

One more bearing to replace: the larger 6011 differential bearing ($11). Lots of oil flows right thru it so it is highly likely that some debris from the shattered bearing will get caught. The same bearing on the donor trans does not seem that smooth, either. So I ordered a new one.

I took apart the dry foot clutch, and it is in great shape, leading me to believe that it has been replaced once. Throwout and pilot bearings both spin smoothly. I fully expected to have to replace at least the friction disk. Good news.

I am going to cut open the hyd filter to see how much it caught. Good news is my Zinga AE-10 filter, which I already have, fits perfectly. This is one case where a large mesh suction filter (50-100 micron) helps, and it probably saved the hyd pump and PS valve.

Reassembly commences. I have salvaged lots of good gears and other parts from inside the tranny. If someone needs something, let me know. I will probably save them until I land a 4x4 version.

Wow, a 4x4 version would be a dream come true! They are scarce as hens teeth around here! Between the two of us, we keep an eye on most of the Toro's coming up for sale in the deep south. Don't have time to chase down or money to buy all of them, to use as parts vehicles but we have too many, to say the least.
Interesting tidbit, the actual heater coil was made by Texas Coils. My KY cab heater sprang a little leak, and we found Texas Coil stamped on it when we pulled it apart. I called them, but haven't gotten any results yet. They want part numbers or pictures with measurements in order to track down the correct one.

Yeah, the PTO option might be nice, as well as the cab version. The diesel engine options, not so desirable to me. I find them noisy and stinky, esp as they age. That 3-cyl Mits engine is sweet.

The golf course I got this from DOES have some 4x4 versions, so I hope to snag one when it gets retired. The spare tranny I got was from a 4x4.

So I suppose this would fall under adding perspective. At one point in my life I used to work as a zoo keeper at Busch Gardens Tampa & we used Toro Workman's extensively for daily animal husbandry.. By extensively I mean we whipped the absolute snot out of those machines and they were almost impossible to kill. Always thought that if I had a need for my property that I'd rather have a Workman than any of the UTV currently advertised on the market.

Yeah, I wonder why these incredibly robust UTVs have not really crossed over to the farmer/rancher/large estate market. Neither the Workman nor the Pro Gator. Probably the cost.

The frame on this machine is more substantial than on my Tacoma. And, at 5000 hours, it has seen its first major failure, which so far seems economically repairable.
