I wonder if you could find some old david bradley attachments. Might be able to use them to dig a shallow trench.

3" deep is not deep enough to need a machine for - a few people with shovels would make quick work of this. You should go at least 24" to protect the pipe and make sure it stays buried - and at that depth you can justify renting something to do the job right.

I've been able to get 3-4 inches for 50' or so with the wide side of a pick-axe without a whole lot of effort.
