So, my niece's 3-year-old has figured out how to open the front door and go walk-about, and has been brought home by the cops twice.

After the first time, his grandpa, installed a new deadbolt six-feet off the floor, and the little fella figured out how to lean his dad’s longboard against the door frame, reach the higher lock, and go walk-about again.

So, his dad has been told that if the cops bring him home again, they may arrest dad for child neglect.

They need some kind of digital tracker, which the kid can wear like a dog tag, that will alert on his folks’ friends when he leaves the yard. I know they make something for dogs, but this is new ground for me.

Does anyone know of something, which would work?

Thanks, Jigs

House would be easy. Alarm system with door and window contacts. Yard not so much although 3 years old seems awful young to me to be outside without eyes on him.

This is a very common problem for parents who are taking care of their parent with alzheimers, who will get up in middle of the night and wander out of the house and am unable to tell whomever they encounter where home is. Investigate tracking and monitoring for alzheimers patients.

A 3 yo kid wandered off downstate last weekend and died of exposure.
Perhaps an alarm which goes off every time that the door is opened?

A dog shock collar with the wire buried in the yard. I'll bet that'd put an end to his walk-abouts.
Really, I'm not kidding. If a dog can be trained with it, I'll bet a 3 year old can.

Old neighbor had twin 3yo boys who were escape artists.

One would head next door to my place, the other would head the opposite direction to visit the elderly couple that lived next to them on the other side.

He finally added slide latches to the top of the doors.

His older kids were instructed to leave the house through the garage.

Neighbor was working in his driveway and wanted to show me something in the house.

We entered through the garage and found that the twins had dragged a chair over too the front door, climbed up on it, and were trying to operate the slide latch with a broom handle

That is exactly what my daughter and son in law did at their home.

They've come a long way with do it yourself wireless alarm systems these days.

They went with a "Ring" system to couple with their ring doorbell.

It had a couple motion detectors, door contacts, and pretty easy to add on if you wanted to do the windows.

I'm pretty sure he mentioned in the post he was worried about arrest for neglect. I don't think this suggestion helps. Lol.

It's no joke and can bring all kinds of grief plus you may soon have a police record.

Code frowns but families with special needs child often use double key deadbolts along with door and window alarms to audible and smart phone alert.

Trackers can be great and many allow you to set up a geo fence alert.

I've used tile which is subscription free and Jiobit which is subscription and excellent tracking.

The problem with any tracker is keeping attached to the person...

A 3 year old in shorts isn't carrying a tracker.

I've imbedded in shoes and jackets...

A friend's hero is the family dog... the dog alerts and won't leave the son so the dog collar tracks them both...

Hopefully it's a phase and parent can instil why we don't wander... many examples even in kids fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel wandering off that kept me close to home lest a witch or a wolf tried to eat me!
