Glenn,

The www.adl.com site is working for me again, also. In addition, the ADL Japan site appears to be legit. It has a copyright date of 2003 (post sale) on it, and "What's New" is as recent as May 31, 2004. Maybe someone can translate that for us - Henro, are you listening?

I think the survey has been taken down by the "powers that be".

Info can be gleaned from whois.com or from any registrar website.

The original email was supposedly from someone in an Arthur D Little office in Japan. This site is owned by an organization in the Netherlands and administered from France. It seems a kind of odd, doesn't it.

Now it may be perfectly on the up and up but it makes you wonder. Did someone hijack this domain? Or what?

I feel slighted!!! I didn't get it ... or at least I don't think I did. If you're not on my address list, any email goes directly to the junk folder. I scan the junk mail every day or so for names or addresses that I recognise before deleting them all. I suppose it could have been there and got deleted because it wasn't familiar.

It is unfortunate that the TBN email addresses were mined but it doesn't particularly upset me. It would seem that it something that anyone could do given the time and inclination. Seems like a lot of work for nothing though.

Just to update everyone...

We contacted the party who sent you the e-mails, and they removed the survey from their website.

They also offered to send an apology to those they e-mailed, but we told them that wouldn't be necessary.

This is a fairly isolated incident, and I think you can rest assured that they won't be contacting you again, or distributing your e-mail addresses around.

That said, we will still be taking some additional measures to better protect your e-mail addresses from manual collection.

Again, my apologies for any inconvenience.

Did you tell them if they wanted to talk tractors to sign up on TBN?

Just my .02... I wasn't offended by their email. Seems it was me that willingly put my email address on tbn?

My thinking is...if anyone was "violated", it was Muhammad & company & not us users. The emails were put up by those of us that gave it, so "we" could contact each other. I"m sure Muhammad & Company, did not intend for this to become a "mailing list" for anyone that had the thoughts/ability to do what was done. So, if any violation was done, it was done in my opinion, to Muhammad and not to us as individuals.

I tend to agree, Richard. Of course, as you said, we put our addresses there so "we" could contact each other. If they harvested those addresses for their survey, I suspect they might also sell that list to others and therefore increase the amount of spam we receive, so yes, we put the addresses there, but for a particular reason, not for someone to use for other purposes. But as far as I know, yes, it was Muhammad and company that was violated; not me.

If anyone is interested the Tractor Survey e-mail was NOT A SCAM.
Arthur D. Little is a well known contract survey company with offices in many major cities around the globe. I checked with their Boston office which is near me and all info in the e-mail checked out. Seeing that the e-mail originated from Japan they are probably doing a paid survey for one of Japan's major tractor manufacturers.
How they went about obtaining our e-mail addresses may or may not have been correct, but I will let you make that call. Remember that most information found on the internet is available to be used by anyone so all I can say is be careful.
