I was able to unload the trailer so I could get some close-up photos of the hydraulic cylinder. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this port on the cylinder? Im not sure if its missing a cap or if its supposed to have a hose run to it. The cylinder is run by a manual lever and that pumps up and releases without any issues.View attachment 707880
This is the frame underneath showing the walking axle.

Like Skeans1 said. It looks like that is a double acting cylinder being used as a single acting cylinder by removing the second hose for hydraulic power down and putting a filtered breather there instead. The breather is there to let air escape from the ram end of the cylinder when the cylinder is extended and let air return back in when the ram retracts by gravity. If that were a cap instead of a breather the ram could not move because of the trapped air locking it. The filter is to keep crap out.

That's a helpful explanation. The filter is probably pretty old now. The issue that occurs is that before the bed raises to its full height the filter is letting quite a bit of fluid past it. When it lowers (gravity down) you hear the fluid running back into the pump body. I wonder if the previous owner overfilled the fluid. I can't imagine that the original design was set-up to allow the filter to express fluid the way it does.

Im going to check for a new "breather filter" online and see what I can find. I believe the cylinder is a Dalton Maverick 3x12. It raises and lowers without any other issues.

The reason it is leaking fluid is the piston seal is allowing fluid to bypass. Not a real big issue other than a little fluid loss. To stop it, the cylinder would need to be resealed.

Thank you. I didn't think the seals were bad since the cylinder lifts and holds significant weight without losing pressure. But that makes sense.

Are you sure it is fluid. You get condensation build up in a single acting cylinder when it sits. It is common for water to squirt out the first time you use it after a period of non-use. If it holds under pressure there should not be any fluid bypass.

I think he used ATF fluid. Its red. You can see it in the picture I provided. It gets to about 3/4 before fully extended and each pump thereafter pushes fluid out of the breather plug (I found that online, thank you).

Nope, not one part on mine is from china...

NONE of the steel, nuts & bolts, or even the bearings, nothing is from china...

How is that cool aid anyway??

I know you are trying to be clever, but I'm serous, there are no china parts on my mill...

I've been to Canada to Norwood, I know the guy who designed my mill and I've talked to him extensively about where the parts come from.

I could go on about it, but I won't...

NOW, if you could speak chinese, you could talk to the guy that designed yours! lol lol

Ahh good times...
You don't think that somewhere between the guy who designed your mill and the guy in charge of production that they didn't maybe swap out a part for a Chinese one to save a dime? Is Canada this mythical place where all the borders are locked and they don't ever buy something from overseas? Not even an internal engine component? You know the thing that Norwood buys completely assembled from the manufacturer and just bolts to their mill. I'm just curious...
